Superboy Has Met His Match
We've got annuals and regular issues dropping on the same day and while that may be confusing to some about what to read first, I've got your back in telling you that you definitely need to read this annual before any more Suicide Squad books. Not only because it's the correct reading order but because we have Superboy vs. Superboy. As we saw in the previous issue, our Suicide Squad Superboy was having some problems and the Squad was teleported away to try and find some medicine to inject in our Teen of Steel but when they got there, the Superboy we've seen in Young Justice was waiting. Let's jump into this issue and see what's going on in the Suicide Squad and how this might change everything. Let's check it out.
We're dealing with some pretty heavy stuff in this issue because while I think most of us are here for the Superboy reveal from the end of the previous issue, we also have the recently freed from the clutches of Amanda Waller, Rick Flag going full-on commando in this issue where he intends to bring Waller down from her insane path of conquering the world for the greater good and to do that it looks like Rick Flag is going to have to even up the odds to achieve his goal and that means...... he's going to need to put together his own Task Force X and it's in this annual that he recruits his first member..... and it's pretty exciting.
While Rick Flag's stuff is cool, it's nothing compared to the monumental showdown between a Superboy and a Superboy and also the reveal with what we're really dealing with, not only with what Superboy have we been dealing with and what's wrong with him but this issue also plays in the idea of Infinite Frontier, where "Everything Matters" because this issue, while it takes us into new and interesting territory with this book, it also calls back to the Superboy comics from the '90s and a big bad from that book that Amanda Waller has used for her own benefit. It's a great callback for Superboy fans and the interaction about how the rest of the team feel about Superboy is portrayed great in here where it looks like our current Task Force X is actually becoming more of a family than previously realized.
All in all, we've got many artists on this issue and for the most part, everything is pretty spectacular looking but personally, I'm here for the story and while I've enjoyed pretty much everything we've gotten from this run so far.... besides for when Red X was involved, this Annual continues that trend where I can wait to see what happens next because not only are we doing something that seems special to the Suicide Squad but for Superboy as well and I love both those things and they're being done in such an interesting and special way right now that Suicide Squad continues to be one of the best books that DC Comics is putting out right now.
Bits and Pieces:
Some interesting things are going on in the Suicide Squad book, from Rick Flag doing his damnedest to take down Amanda Waller to Superboy discovering some hidden truths about himself, and while some aspects, like dimensional vibrations kind of irks me, I love the team dynamic and family aspects that are involved with this Task Force X and can't wait to see where Robbie Thompson takes us next on this journey.
9/10 Nice! Now we only need Rocksteady to bring it home with another banger with Suicide Kill The Justice League next year, Letsgo! It's been way too long. People snarked when kept on saying suicide squad was the best movie he had ever worked on. Clearly being given full carte blanche with the story and characters meant he just went and had fun with it and it's showing with the result we have here, a great fun movie.
