Is It Good?

Superboy: The Man of Tomorrow #2 is a respectable adventure comic starring DC's favorite Kryptonian clone. Set in a distant world, Connor fights gigantic monsters and a superpowered group of aliens to save innocent people or die trying.

If that description sounds cliché, that's perfectly okay. There's nothing wrong with a good old-fashioned adventure to get a hero's attitude and actions pointed in the right direction.

Why would Connor need to be pointed in the right direction? Well, if you read the last issue, Connor's struggling to find his "place," so this adventure is the challenge he needs to prove to others (and himself) that he's up to the task of wearing the big 'S' on his chest. Kenny Porter played up Connor's insecurity in a big way in issue #1, but Connor talks his way through it in this issue, which gives the character some much-needed maturity and growth.

This issue gives readers the backstory of the Cosmoteers. They're a collection of Dominator X experimental bio-weapons who escaped Dominator oppression to form a team with a mission to end the Dominator's influence over the galaxy. The Cosmoteer way of doing things, however, doesn't take into account innocent lives or collateral damage. In effect, Porter has created a strong foil/anti-hero antagonist for Connor to teach and learn from. Hopefully, in the right order.

Porter's writing execution is excellent. The pacing is great, the dialog/narration is top-notch, and the plot progression is substantial. In other words, you get a good amount of meaningful, well-constructed story for the cover price.

How's the art? It's very good. There's nothing to complain about from Jahnoy Lindsay's art style. The figure and line work are excellent. The colors pop and the action is kinetic.

Superboy: The Man of Tomorrow #2 is a respectable follow-up issue wherein Connor Kent is forced to confront his self-doubt and "heroes" with a faulty moral compass. Porter's writing is solid from start to finish, and Lindsay's art is excellent.
