Pym-Tron Making Moves

I personally haven't been the biggest fan of any of Marvel's event titles, or crossovers for that matter, lately but Infinity Countdown has begun to change that opinion with each coming issue.  I've been digging the characters that have been featured in this story so far, enjoyed the suprises provided throughout, and although I'm weary of the incoming tie-ins, if they too have the quality attached to them the series has so far I may have to dip my toe in that pond as well.  So I'll stop gushing now and provide a peek at issue three this week and some thoughts. Boy oh boy. This book is set in Baltimore. The things I know about Baltimore are mostly based on a Gram Parsons song The Streets of Baltimore (with Emmylou Harris on backing vocals), and the fact that those same streets were the subject of ground breaking 1990's tv show Homicide: A life on the Streets. I loved that series, a really gritty cop drama set on the crime ridden streets of the big B. Which brings us neatly onto Stray Bullets: Sunshine and Roses Part 1, also set on the streets of Baltimore in the 70s and 80s. Lets see what it was all about.

The first volume of Daniel Warren Johnson's tale of a feuding post-apocalyptic world was very much the story of war between two tribes, the Roto and the Panzina. More specifically it gave us a tale of a revenge mission on the part of the Roto against the Panzina. The story told of how the leader of the Roto, Abba, lost his wife, and saw his daughter lose a hand as a result of cruel attacks from the Panzina. Volume 1 was the tale of how Abba, his daughter Thea and son Rollo conducted a subsequent revenge mission. This volume, collecting issues 7-12 of the series, provides us with the continuation of that mission.

Last issue we saw how the Athenians scraped an unexpected victory against the Persians at the Battle of Marathon. Little did they know however that while they were engaged there, the bulk of the Persian forces were amassing on the coast of Athens. Let's see how they fare in this second installment in this comic reader's guide to a classical education (much more fun that ancient history class).

The first two issues of this Black Hammer spin-off (part of the Hammerverse...Hammer time!!) I actually found pretty touching. It depicted the rise of Doctor Star and his growing need to explore the galaxy. His wanderlust came at the expense of his family though, and his distance is extended considerably as he goes to rescue a group of peaceful aliens and save them from a mortal threat. In doing so he strayed too close to a black hole, and on return, the time had passed at different rates back on earth. What seemed like a few hours for Star, was 18 years back on earth. Think Interstellar.

The American Dream, works for some, not for others. Really hard for it to work for me since I don't live in America. That dream though is at the heart of this book, and it is a story that has been told in one form or another since the days of the Old West. Live free or die goes the motto, and it's a motto that the lead character of this series, Glory, places front and center. Let's see how she fares.

The imagery around this title really caught my imagination as it started to pop up in previews online over the last few weeks. I'm a big fan of colorful books and I like off the wall stories so it really did appear to be the type of book that I would enjoy. Let's see how it was.
