Goodnight and Good Riddance

For the life of me, I have no idea how anyone could like this book.  Sure, it looks fantastic thanks to the art of Trevor McCarthy and Syzmon Kudranski and the color work of Guy Major, but after that... Seriously, a commentator on the site (unfortunately he/she was anonymous) advised me to just look at the pretty pictures and ignore the word bubbles completely and they may be on to something.  In the end, though, I have to do my duty and actually read this issue as well as look at it.  Well, boys and girls, I'm strapping on my helmet and going in.  If I don't return in ten minutes, tell my Wife and kids that I love them and tell Eric that the Puppet Master movies suck.

If you are new to this series and want in, I can't really help you.  It's been such a jumbled mess that I can't put a and b together myself, let alone explain it to another person.  Just read the first page of this issue and you'll know what you're getting into.  Ann is at it again with her mixed metaphors, jumbled dialogue and confusing scenarios.  Crows, hawks, drones, bots...priceless.

I think anonymous is on to something.

This story has obviously been about Klarion, but it's also focused a ton of time on the budybots.  The idea of little robots grown inside you with your own cells, destined to fulfill your dreams sounded creepy from the start and it really didn't get any better.  I did like the sarcastic take on consumerism that accompanied it, but even that got lost in a tidal wave of ridiculousness.  This issue throws in a little anti-buddybot sentiment...great.

The story itself involves a resurrected Teekl (finally!) fighting Gargora while Klarion tries to save Klarwitch who calls him "Dad" and weirds me out.  It really makes no sense so I'm not embarrassed to say that when the fight was over, I had to take the characters word for it.  I really don't know what the hell happened.

The issue ended with brand new tech products being developed, demons partying and Klarion and crew ready to start classes again.  Of course we have to end with the most cliched ending of all-time..."The End" followed by a question mark.  Perfect!

It's over guys.  We did it.  Another book bites the dust and it looks like Ann's evil reign has ended. I'm sure it won't be forever and I know when she returns (a six issue mini in the new "story trumps continuity" DC Comics?), I will be doing the review.  I'm the only one on our site who will.  See you then, Ann.

The art in this issue and series was fantastic.  Really, it's a shame that it was wasted in a book like this because it was so great.  Kudos to McCarthy, Kudranski, Major and everyone else involved.  I look forward to seeing all or your work in the future.

Bits and Pieces:

What can I say, the bleeding has finally ended and we can all start the healing process.  This issue was such a fitting end to Klarion...confusing, ridiculous and beautiful.  Now that my tour of duty is done, I'm heading home to be with my family and maybe someday I'll be able to talk about what I've gone through.  Maybe.  Someday.

  1. I really hope DC puts these artists back together on another book. They were golden and only weighed down by bad writing.

    1. McCarthy starts on Aquaman in June (with Cullen Bunn), but nothing on Kudranski yet

    1. You said it...this book should never have been green lit in the first place.
