What a Super Family

There are some things that come along at just the right time and no, I'm not talking about my daily pizza delivery.  I'm talking about Superman: Lois and Clark.  While I originally thought this book sounded like nonsense and a desperation move by DC, it is exactly what the doctor ordered...if doctors ordered comic books.  It's a strange thing, but most people want to like their superheroes, especially Superman.  The Superman in the main DC You is not likable, in fact, he's kind of a jerk. Sure, he's lost most of his powers and doesn't have a secret identity anymore, but when it comes down to it, no matter what happens, people look to Superman to be a good, no great, person.  Fans just haven't got that recently.  Until last month, that is.  Superman: Lois and Clark gives us fans that Superman, but Dan Jurgens doesn't stop there.  He gives us a Lois Lane who is a thousand times more likable than what we are getting (Lois fans have had it bad as well) and little Jon who I can only pray will eventually fill the void of a good Superboy.  That's a lot of hope being heaped on one book, but after one issue, I think it may be able to do it.  I'm getting ahead of myself, though, as we are here to see if this issue is any good.  Spoiler alert...it is.  Now, after I pay for this pizza, we'll get on with the show.  See you in a few...

The issue opens up with a flashback showing a typical day for the "Whites".  Lois is working on a story way below her usual pay grade, cute little Jon is, well, being cute and Clark is off saving Chicago.  Yep, another typical day.

I'll give Dan Jurgens some credit right off the bat, I love seeing these characters.  Maybe he has some magic dust he sprinkles on the script or maybe I just love seeing them as a happy family, being good people and doing what's right for the greater good.  You know, like heroes.  I say that, but this scene also shows the beginnings of Lois' need to do something bigger...a desire that will prove very dangerous to their very existence.

Back to Chicago, seeing Superman in action is great, but seeing the baddie, Shockwave (He likes to break things!), was even better.  It's not that I am a fan of the Booster Gold villain (if this is even him), but I just love the fun of it all.  Shockwave doesn't last long as Supes takes his armor from him just as the government jets show up again.  The tension of Superman getting caught is building with each issue.

This book is also filled with mystery.  We see the government investigating the crash site of the Excalibur and again, Superman is on the verge of being discovered because of his actions.  More mysterious is what happened to Hank Henshaw.  I have a few guesses, but whether I'm right, I'm sure that that is going to lead directly to Superman.  Tension, people.

Up until now, Jurgens is really stressing the point that Superman just can't help being a good guy.  He would do himself and his family a huge solid if he could just sit back and let the world (and it's own heroes) save itself.  He can't because he's Superman and that's what makes this book so good.

That theme gets twisted a little when it comes to Lois and Jon.  They can't help being themselves either and it leads to Jon being sent home from school and Lois on the run from some Men in Black.  Actually, her and Jon are on the run and without both of them reacting quickly and Superman showing up, things could have escalated quickly.  Someone doesn't want Lois to publish her new book and will do anything to stop it.

The book ends with the continuation of the mysterious Oblivion Stone story, but until I learn more about it, I can't say I really care in that department.  My interest lies squarely with Lois, Clark and Jon.

Lee Week's art is so good and just another reason I can recommend this book to every Superman fan.  Everything in this book looks clean, simple and fantastic.  No tricks needed here.  Just classic Superman.

Bits and Pieces:

If you have been turned off by the DC You Superman, pick up this book and fall in love all over again.  This is the Superman that we have been missing and Dan Jurgens throws in a great Lois Lane as an awesome bonus.  This book is about family and the destiny and what happens when those two things collide.  It's got action, humor and mystery and thanks to Lee Weeks, great art.  I can't recommend it enough.

9.3/10

    1. I could care less about the ending Oblivion Stone story and we are still getting setup for the series. If it keeps going, there will be a 10 in the future

If you are thinking about taking up an instrument the harmonica comes highly recommended. They are fairly cheap, although the price rises with quality, portable, and can blend into just about any recording as added background instrumentalization. With birthday and holiday gifts around the corner, your shopping can be done in a flash.

  5. I've reached a point where I wouldn't mind killing the Truth Superman along with Lois and replace with this book's characters. I'd even give Jonathan super powers and let him blossom as a younger Superman. Maybe let Diana or the returning Bruce adopt him as a brother for Damian. Hell, let's make it a soft reboot with the Martian Mahunter's return and call it the All New All Different Justice League..

That's how much I'm willing to get rid of the current Truth crap.

    2. yikes...that's intense...and makes enough sense to me! I love this book and it's because it is so good, but also because it is so much better than any of the other Superman books. God forbid we actually get a likeable Superman and Lois Lane. The nerve of the fans to want such a thing. My guess is we don't have to kill anyone, DC will have to do some sort of reboot soon enough or they will be in more trouble than they've already gotten themselves into
