I am back with another Legend of Wonder Woman review and if you've been keeping up (actually, I am soooo behind), last chapter ended with something I knew would come, but feared all the same. Diana has found herself in the Outside World.  Why would I fear that?  Because I was loving every bit of the story of Diana growing up on Themyscira.  Granted, I'm positive that Renae De Liz and Ray Dillon will have me loving this next chapter in Diana's life, but it's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday...that really should be a song.  Oh well, time to dry my eyes and move forward as Diana takes her first steps in a larger world that has seen it's share of darkness.

The issue opens with a strange sequence involving a Thomas Byde who seems to be fond of carving, but not of receiving bad news via telegram.  It's a very surreal scene that ends in the unthinkable, but then we find out it's all a dream...or is it?  It's hard to say exactly what it is (besides gorgeous and intriguing), but that's put aside quickly as we see that Diana has survived her misfortune at sea and is being cared for by a nice old couple and their cat.  Well, at least the old lady is nice.

Renae De Liz does such a good job of quickly developing characters through dialogue, art and situation.  Because she uses all three so well, it's like you know the characters in no time at all, whether they are good or bad.

I love the old couple who have taken Diana in, but especially the old salt husband who found her adrift at sea.  He is one of those hard on the outside, but soft on the inside kind of guys and it's obvious that his bark is way more dangerous than his bite.  While Diana eats the last piece of pear cobbler (much to the old man's chagrin), the old lady tells the story of their grandson who never returned home from the War.  The funny thing is, we never get the names of the couple and if I was a betting man, I know what last name I'd wager on.  Hint: it rhymes with "Trevor"...no wait, it rhymes with "clever".

This chapter really flies along and after hearing more about the kind lady's grandson, Diana is well enough to get up and try to find her way back to her own people.  Before leaving the old lady gives Diana a present that is yet another nice little nod to the classic Wonder Woman mythos.  Of course, that could just be wishful thinking on my part, but I don't think so.

The story continues with Diana walking through the woods and having some Amazon gal thinking time.  She comes to the conclusion that the darkness that has been taking over Themyscira is indeed, this Outside World.  The issue ends with a narration telling us that fate is guiding Diana's steps and those steps lead to...I can't spoil the cliffhanger!  I will tell you that it looks like Diana will soon find one of her closest friends and also a world she might not be fully prepared for...like a young Jim Werner at his first 7th grade dance.  I hope Diana has better luck!!!

The next big chapter of Diana's life is beginning and De Liz is taking it slow. We have a couple of mysteries (Rhymes with "Trevor", I mean "lever"), but this chapter is letting both Diana and the reader slowly acclimate to the new surroundings.  It is heavy on the setup, but I like the dreamy quality of it as we take time to gain our footing before racing forward.

The art is never going to be a question in this series.  In fact, I should just come up with a standard phrase to put in this spot every chapters..."Renae De Liz and Ray Dillon keep pleasuring my eye holes with their art" doesn't feel quite appropriate so I guess I'll have to go back to the drawing board. Stay tuned.

Bits and Pieces:

Surprise, Surprise!  I loved another chapter of The Legend of Wonder Woman.  While this chapter's score is a little lower than most, that is only because this is more of a setup issue than the usual.  It's understandable as De Liz has slowed the pace a bit to get everyone, including Diana, fully rested for the excitement ahead.  By the hint of the cliffhanger, that should start next chapter.  I can't wait!

8.0/10
