Weird Science DC Comics Best Books of the Week 9/8/18

It's September and the kids have all gone back to school and that means...well, it really has nada to do with comics and how much we liked them.  The list this week is dominated by #1s and a certain writer whose name rhymes with Rian Ichael Endis.  Here are the books we deemed the Books of the Week!

Border Town #1

Writer: Eric M Esquivel
Artist: Ramon Villalobos, Tamara Bonvillain and Deron Bennett
Publisher: Vertigo
Release Date: September 5, 2018
Cover Price: $3.99

What Jim Said: This is a really good horror mystery book with some kick-ass characters that I want to see more of. Sure, I don't really know what's going on yet, but that's part of the fun and I have my theories.  Good art and an interesting story make this one easy to recommend.

Score: 8.8/10

The Dreaming #1

Written By: Simon Spurrier
Illustrated By: Bilquis Evely
Colors By: Mat Lopes
Letters By: Simon Bowland
Cover Price: $3.99
On Sale Date: September 5, 2018

What Reggie Said: A perfect companion and continuation of the original Sandman series, this issue establishes some new characters and concepts that blend seamlessly with the Dreaming that we already know. The rendering and storytelling is great, but it's the coloring that strikes the exact mood for such a strange book. I would call that mood "strange."

Score: 9.0/10

United States vs. Murder Inc. #1

Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Michael Avon Oeming
Publisher: DC Comics
Release Date: September 5, 2018
Cover Price: $3.99

What Jim Said: This is my favorite Jinxworld book so far.  The story and art are simple enough to jump into, but both end up showing more complexity by the end.  Sure, some may be taken aback by the language and violence, but neither bother me as long as I am invested in the characters and the story.  I was and I look forward to continuing reading this book.

Score: 8.0/10

Adventures of the Super Sons #2

Writer: Peter J. Tomasi
Art team: Carlo Barberi, Art Thibert, Protobunker, and Rob Leigh
Covers: Dan Mora and Jorge Jimenez
Release Date: 9/5/18
Cover Price: $3.99

What Jon Said: There were complaints from some folks I know (like one Jim Werner) that the pacing of issue #1 was off, particularly in the beginning with some retreading of old ground from the first series. It moved past that towards the end of issue #1, and it is barely present in issue #2 if at all. This is full steam ahead with The Gang vs. The Super Sons, and I for one can’t wait to see where we go from here.

Score: 9.0/10

Written by: Brian Michael Bendis
Art by: David Mack
Cover Price: $3.99
Release Date: September 5, 2018

What Hussein Said: I think everybody should check this out. The art is simply brilliant and the writing is a lot more fun and breezy than Bendis' recent Jinxworld material.

Score: 9.0/10
