DC Comics Best Covers of the Week: June 13, 2018

There Will Be Covers

When I am going through the cover images for a given week of DC Comics, I have learned not to bypass certain images in hopes of finding a better one later. I can always whittle down a smaller subset if it goes over my somewhat arbitrarily determined list of five. And, more often than not, there are no better covers forthcoming. Food for thought!

Batman: Prelude to the Wedding, Part Three: Batgirl vs. The Riddler #1
Rafael Albuquerque
Yeah, the word balloons have something to do with it. But more than that, it's the composition and anatomy in this piece. The Riddler's stance is so goofy, I have to love it. And he's still talking smack while Batgirl bests him. Normally, I'd think a background like this was a little lazy, but here it really supports the action in the foreground.

New Super-Man and the Justice League of China #24 variant
Bernard Chang
"Computer, show me the entirety of New Super-Man in one image." I am sad to see this series go, and likewise I'm sad to see Bernard Chang's variants go. Though they don't always make the "Best of" list, it's often pretty cool and stylistic. And his covers will often have a little quip! Not this one, though; it's just a cast having its final bow.

Detective Comics #982
Sebastian Fiumara
Listen, I loved the Legends of the Dark Knight story line "The Cult" back in the day, and Bernie Wrightson's artwork had more than a little bit to do with it. This doesn't really evoke that style, but it's a pretty dynamic image. Batman taking on three Cthulu dudes! Really, it's the coloring that does the heavy lifting in this image, offsetting the dark characters and tying in ol' Deacon Blackfire himself at the upper right.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #23 variant
Guillem March
This reminds me so much of one of Gary Larsen's The Far Side comic strips. Specifically the one where there's a bunch of penguins, and then one pops out and sings "I gotta be me!" Uh, but it's a cool cover besides! The black and white framing, the perspective aided by falling raindrops...but yeah. It was the allusion to that Far Side comic that tickled my fancy.

Suicide Squad #43 variant
Francesco Mattina
Yes, Mr. Mattina, I would like to purchase your Heavy Metal album or t-shirt. This is a striking image that increases in interest the more you look at it. I love Killer Croc's skull especially. Sometimes, an image needs only to bad-ass to qualify for this esteemed weekly list.
