Deception, Betrayal, Murder, It's All In A Day's Work For Superboy

Last issue of Superboy we saw the makings of an army led by our Boy Of Steel, well not my boy of Steel, I'm still holding out for Kon to come back.  But you get the point.  Superboy and Schiz break out two more meta human hybrids, Volt and Lodestone, and then it's time for murder.  The team disguises themselves as a well known terrorist group and attack a weapons facility and after they kill all the guards on site, they load up on weapons for their upcoming war.  But just so you know, Superboy is using these poor hybrids, and after he's done with them, he's going to kill them.  It's weird but I'm rooting for these new characters to figure out the ruse and kill Superboy.  It's a strange time in comics for me, when I'm rooting for the title character to get killed.  On with the show.

Explain It!:

This issue starts out after Teen Titans #28, so don't expect Kid Flash or Solstice, they'll be busy being locked up for murder, and serving life sentences together.  What happened to our heroes?  I never thought I'd want Superboy Prime to come back yelling "We destroyed the wrong world."  We should totally Infinite Crisis this universe.

The remaining Teen Titans investigate the destroyed weapons facility, and it seems pretty cut and dry to them, except that the video logs were wiped, and you'd think terrorists wouldn't want to keep their identities to themselves, you know because of all the inflicting terror and all.  Before this train of thought can get some backing, Superboy shows up with a Legion of Superheroes who he'll help to solve this crime.  Well we all know this is bullshit, but he passes Schiz off as Saturn Girl, Lodestone as Cosmic Boy, and Volt as Lightning Lad.  You know just in case the Titans go back to their time and check up on the names they'll at least be close to the same time period.  Superboy convinces the Titans that he has this under control, and once they leave, he sets his plans in motion.

Superboy tells his trio of hybrids to go forward with their plan, but what they don't know is that he's working to twist their emotions towards his benefit.  You see they infiltrate a holding facility that is keeping more hybrids on ice, and before they can free anymore of their comrades, a guard shoots Volt, and then detonates the facility.  Luckily for the trio Superboy shows up and saves them.  Luckily my ass.  We find out that Superboy was disguised as the guard, and killed all the other hybrids and injured Volt, solely to get them behind the idea of murdering everyone.

Superboy later tells his new team that the entity Harvest is calling him back to his own time, to start changing the future by killing all the metas that would later betray the future.  He continues to tell them that Harvest wants them to stay there to witness the change in history, and to maintain their plan if Superboy fails, or if there is still a meta uprising.  In the end Superboy goes back in time leaving both his teams, and plans on using Schiz, Lodestone, and Volt to help him kill Harvest when the time is right.  That's our murder filled Superboy for this month, join me next month for more murder.  See you then.

Bits and Pieces:

It's more of the same as our new Superboy sets his plans in motion to murder all heroes.  Just a bunch of manipulation, murder, and lies, this is the new Superboy we get month after month.  It's getting a bit underwhelming.  But for a piece of good news this is the last issue of Superboy in the 30th Century, so hopefully next month we can see how the heroes of our time deal with this menace of Steel.  But I doubt it will help.  Just sitting back and counting the days until we finally get Kon back, and can get back to having some hope, and heroism in our lives.

6/10

  1. Thanks for a fun review, this is definitely in the 'you read it so I don't have to' camp. It's unbelievable how badly DC had fumbled the ball with the latest Superboy relaunch.

  2. Thanks for the kind words. I started my review style for people who couldn't follow everything, and for people who have already read the story, and wanted to get another perspective. Yeah Superboy has dug itself into a mighty big hole, and I don't know if we'll ever get out of it. A few months back when Superboy went to investigate a highschool, I got really interested thinking it could last. A Superboy Breakfast Club was what I truly wanted to see. Glad you enjoyed.
