Top 5 Fridays: Digital First Comics We Want From DC Comics

Welcome back to the #1 Top Five Fridays list that I happen to look at......... Well it's not a lie.  This week I figured we'd look at Digital First Comics that we at Weird Science would love to see come out  this year and the reason we're looking at Digital Firsts is because Wonder Woman '77 came out this week and you know what?  Nobody had any clue.  I mean unless you were really looking forward to this comic and probing the interwebs for it, it kind of came out of nowhere and just proves our point here that the Digital First line is kind of the redheaded stepchild of DC Comics.  Yeah, they want one to come out everyday of the week but they'll be damned if they'll actually promote them or give us a reliable schedule for these comics.  It's a shame because it seems like DC really has a leg up over everyone else when it comes to digital titles and yet they come off like they don't really want them to sell.  Okay, that's enough ranting about policies that companies have that I make up or down right exaggerate, let's check out this week's list.  Top 5 Digital First Comics We Want From DC Comics.

#5.  Batman: The Animated Series

Now I know there was a series that came out back in the day dealing with the characters and events from this show but what I'm talking about is an actual continuation from where we left off that's in canon with the show..........Kinda like Batman Beyond 2.0 did before it was cancelled.  What I'm proposing though is filling in some of the gaps between where this show left off and where Batman Beyond began and to me that means starting off after the flashback that Barbara Gordon had during the Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker movie; where we saw the Joker's demise.  It's the furthest in the Batman TAS story that we had gotten to and makes sense to me that there is where we need to start.  You know some of those taboo stories where Bruce and Barbara were a couple and trying to get Tim to recover after his abuse from the Joker and maybe even leading up to where the Joker dies and the need for a Clown Prince of Crime starts and we get to see the origins of the Joker gangs.  It's something that I'd just like to see and I think there are enough fans of the show like me that the title would sell...................not that DC gives out that kind of information so I guess we'd never know.

#4.  Batgirl Beyond

Now I know what you'll probably say here, "How could a Batgirl Beyond comic work when a Batman Beyond comic didn't?"  Well right away I just want to say, don't be such a Negative Nancy.  I don't know what went into Batman Beyond getting cancelled if it was because of lack of sales or something within the company, all I'm saying is why not Batgirl Beyond?  The character of Batgirl in the Batman Beyond universe was introduced in the comic but was only given four issues to really do anything and I think that enough people are pissed that Batman Beyond was cancelled that they'd pick up this book just to continue seeing what's going down in Neo Gotham and to check out this relatively newish character and how she'd impact the world of Batman Beyond.  Now I have to tell you that I did not read the issues of Batman Beyond where this character was featured but long before those issues ever came out, I was saying how cool it would be to have this type of character and I still feel that way.  Bring on Batgirl Beyond so we can get our fix of the DC animated universe of the future.

#3.  Robins

I'm a huge fan of all the Robins and while I can accept that there will never be a full out Robins book in the regular DC New 52 continuity, I don't see why we couldn't have a weekly digital title that could showcase any story the writer of that story line would want to tell about some point that all of the Robins got together to take down a big bad.  Pretty much the sky is the limit when it comes to this because it wouldn't necessarily be in continuity so there wouldn't be any assholes like me screaming shenanigans when something doesn't completely add up.  It would just be fun stories ranging from a 4-6 part story arc for Robin fans or anyone that loves seeing these characters together.  I'm sure there are enough Nightwing fans that would love to see Dick back in the mask that would pick this series up even if they weren't complete fans of the other Robins................But seriously, who doesn't love all the Robins?

#2.  Superman '78

In vein with the Batman '66 series and the Wonder Woman '77 series I would love to see a take on continuing where this movie series left off and what creators who would keep the budget and technology restrictions of the time in mind when working on this title would do.  I mean we kind of had a Brainiac character in Superman 3 but who wasn't exactly Brainiac due to the restrictions I've already stated.  I just like the idea of seeing a Christopher Reeves Superman and a Gene Hackman Luthor on a printed page and what other characters would be like if they had eventually shown up if the movie series had continued.  You might think that this idea is already played out with the other titles that are similar but don't we all just long for a simpler time where Superman wasn't destroying all of Metropolis to take out a single Kryptonian..................  That reminds me I really want to see the return of a Terrance Stamp Zod and the classic line "Kneel before Zod".  Maybe I'm just nostalgic because when I was growing up this was my first Superman besides for the cartoons and as cheesy as they might be now, I thought they were epic at the time and I truly believed that a man could fly.

#1.  Tim Burton's Batman

Yes, just like my proposed Superman '78, this title is just taking another movie series and continuing where the movies left off but what fan hasn't thought about what further installments of Batman's series would look like under the helm of Tim Burton?  Now while this one is the #1 slot of digital comics that I want to see, it is also the hardest I think to actually get done because it would entail Tim Burton actually being hands on with at least the stories and the character designs but man it would be something to see if he actually went for it.  I'm talking about finally saying goodbye to Batman Forever and Batman and Robin and having a actual continuation to Tim Burton's vision on how he would of done future movies and characters.  While I originally saw Batman '66 when I was a kid, Michael Keaton officially became my Batman when I saw this flick at the drive in way back in '89 and have been craving that high ever since.  I also think that a title like this would sell just like anything else that Batman's name is on but you add that Tim Burton before it and people will just go nuts.

That's it for this Top 5 Fridays and I do want to apologize for the very Batman heavy list............ It's just Batman.............. who doesn't want to see more Batman?  When it all comes down to it, everything here has a nostalgia factor that gives me the warm squishies inside and I do really believe that other people would love to see them as well............I can't be the only one living in the past.  I hoped you enjoyed the list and as usual if you have anything that you'd like to see come to digital first comics, chime in.  I hope you have a wonderful and safe weekend and we'll see you back here in seven.  Boosh!

    1. Why the fuck not indeed. Obviously Batman '89 wouldn't really work and possibly Batman '66 because of the camp, but I could totally see Wonder Woman '77 and Superman '78 joining forces to take down the bad guys. It's a comic I'm just waiting for.

    2. I immediately take back the Batman '66 comment. If given the proper writer it could all work together and Wonder Woman and Superman could even comment about the flamboyant nature of Batman villains.

  2. I've longed for a Batman '39 comic about a lethal Bats drawn by Darwyn Cooke

  3. Martian Manhunter 55 - Martian Manhunter was introduced in 1955. So a comic set in that era featuring the sci-fi / horror aesthetics of that time will do the character justice

  5. I would read the crap out of Robins. Superman '78 and Batman '89 would be great, too. How about Superboy '88? The Flash '90? Especially Flash '90, given how many echoes they're making in the new one. Twenty-five years of rediscovery!

    1. I can't believe you know Miss Florida, the mother from Good Times. The hell with Ogaday ,I have so many questions for Florida. Did JJ ever sell any of those awful paintings, can I get Thelma's phone number and how did you guys survive when James died? Also, why did Penny look so much like a young Janet Jackson?

I'm sure she hung out with Shirley from What's Happening and Weezyf from The jeffersons and I have a ton of questions for them. Please help me.
