Top 5 Fridays: What We're Looking Forward To From DC Comics In 2015

It's that time of year again where we forget about everything awesome that we were given in the previous year and shout out to whoever will listen "What You Got For Me Now?!"  Yeah, we're a bunch of assholes that way but what are you going to do, huh?  Change fanboys and fangirls.........Unlikely.  For this Top 5 Fridays we'll be looking at the things that I want this year and possibly some things that other people on this site want to see but it's not like I'm taking a poll or anything so hopefully they see something they like.  I'm going to keep this opener short so we can just get on with 2015 and the things that we're looking forward to from DC Comics this year.  Let's check it out.

#5.  Blue Beetle Being Reintegrated In The New 52

Now if you've been reading my Top 5's for awhile.............. or have just happened to accidentally seen 3 of them, then you'll probably know that I'm a huge Blue Beetle fan and I can't stop putting him on these lists, because I just need to see more of this teenage powerhouse.  Let me drop a little knowledge on you.  Blue Beetle had an awesome series that people didn't read and because of this it was cancelled.  Well not wanting to waste such a cool character DC used him in the short lived pseudo Green Lantern spin off: Threshold, that was cancelled so fast that the writers didn't really have time to wrap everything up so the main character was simply killed and Blue Beetle was sent back to Earth............... but he was never seen again.  Now don't go thinking that it's only been a little while, that title was finished in October of 2013......... It's been enough time and I'm sure that Jaime's parents are worrying out of their minds and you know what?  So am I.  Bring him back so that everyone reading comics can have a piece of this awesome character............. Hey!  You know what?   He's a superhero and he's a teen.............. Only if there was something we could do with those two things.

#4.  New Titles!

That's right folks, I'm not some sort of dynamo that is superior in anyway, as it turns out I'm just like you and like you, I want more titles this year and ones that we can actually get behind.  That's right Aquaman and The Others, Klarion and Infinity Man, I'm talking to you.  These are my top 3 new titles that I want right off the bat before we figure out what we're doing on the Lantern situation this year.  Geoff Johns has worked so hard on all these characters with his time on Justice League and they have yet to get their own solo and I think that is a tragedy..........Maybe I'm being over dramatic but that doesn't take away the fact that these characters should have their own titles..........Maybe get rid of Chief though, he's an asshole and I want to have fun with the Doom Patrol........... Oh and if you think that Cyborg can't support his own book then team him up with the Metal Men or something........Just make 2015 a happy one by doing everything I say.

#3.  Make Sure That The Dark Characters Stick Around

Remember when the New 52 started and at the back of the comic we could see what other comics in the vein of the one we were reading were coming out?  I'll take that as a yes and hope you also remember that the magical characters were labelled as "Dark".  With the recent cancellations that DC threw at us it seems that the only "Dark" characters remaining when Convergence is over are Justice League Dark and Constantine................. and looking at Constantine's numbers it looks like that title might be the next to go........ Especially if the TV show isn't renewed for next season.  All I'm saying here is that I hope that the "Dark" titles don't just fade away, I really dig them and I'd kinda like them to stick around this year.

#2.  Making The Most Out of Our Lanterns

Just like the "Dark" characters getting the shaft due to DC cancellations it seems that we're dealing with our own personal Blackest Night with the revelation that most of the Lantern titles were cancelled as well.  We're looking at the loss of Corps, New Guardians and Red Lanterns and that just blows my freaking mind.  I'm more of a ring slinger myself than a magic buff so these characters and their titles get a better ranking then the "Dark" characters and I'm seriously worried about how the Green Lanterns of the DCU will be represented after Convergence.  We've got Green Lantern which right now is being represented by Hal Jordan and we've got Sinestro........... You can guess who stars in that title.  Now while I can kind of understand getting rid of Corps because since Hal Jordan has taken over as leader it does feel like we have two Corps books each month but no Kyle Rayner? No Guy Gardner?........... Having John Stewart taking a back seat to Hal?  It all sounds disjointed and weird and not in the let's keep the lights off and whatever happens happens kind of way.  Hopefully more info will come down the line so I can keep my sanity about the future of my Lanterns.

#1.  Convergence Makes Sense and Doesn't Piss Everyone Off

\
You have no idea how worried I am about this two month event.......... So let me tell you.  Here we have a strange event that's not in September and it's all because DC is moving to L.A. and right from the get go that seems like a really weird reason to have an event.  Besides for that though we'll have two months of a story where Brainiac finds the "Vanishing Point" and is able to collect cities from all over the multiverse and their different timelines.  If that doesn't sound like it screws up old continuity enough, from what I understand Brainiac then decides to intertwine the domes that he's keeping each place in and see who survives the event.  What kind of collector is that?  I'd be devastated if I came home and half my action figures were destroyed simply because other action figures hated their jerk off faces.  So we've got that and then individual stories from old continuity going back decades and while that might sound like fun it seems that it will also alienate fans of the New 52 and fans of the old continuity that have been screaming for their characters back.  It's only two months yes but I'm kind of pissed that I have to wait two months to get back to the New 52 stories that I've been reading and for fans of the old continuity it kind of seems like a tease to bring their characters back for only two months for a no hold barred death match with Elseworlds and then taking them away.  So yeah, I really hope that Convergence goes off without a hitch or a riot due to it's confusing sounding nature and it's use and un-use of characters.

That's it for this first week of 2015 and this years first Top 5 Fridays.  Looking at this list I'm thinking that I'm a glass half empty kind of guy but hopefully with DC announcing things in the future and the stories that can be told, I can simply look at that glass and not care about how full it is and just drink the hell out of it.  I hope you enjoyed this list and I hope you all had a very fun and safe New Years.  See you in seven where I probably complain about something else............Let's stay positive though.  Boosh!

    2. Blue Beetle in my opinion is totally worth reading. At first they seemed like smaller stories trying to get Jaime to deal with his new superhero persona and then moved up from there and the art was fantastic. Buddy Cop John and Guy were great but at some point I would like John to step out in the lime light and be able to hold his own book by himself. I know he's dedicated to the Corps and with that will most likely always have Lanterns around him but I want to see John go back to Earth so we could just see John Stewart being himself in his natural environment. With the Dark titles you are totally correct and the most embarrassing thing about that is when I was finished with the list I finished reading last week's Gotham By Midnight and never even thought about it correlating. Happy New Year

    3. I heard that you have to read threshold to complete the story threads from blue beetle..is that right or can I just read his own standalone 16 issues?

    4. As much as I bad mouthed Threshold in the past, it did have some cool moments and the only reason I read the whole thing was because of Blue Beetles inclusion. They also have a New 52 version of Captain Carrot who's name is Captain K'Rot. He's like Rocket Raccoon and is searching for the guy that cut off his leg for a good luck charm. In retrospect the series might be decent but I hated at the time so really it's a toss up to me whether people will dig it or not.

    5. I just realized that I didn't answer your question at all. To get from his series to him apparently going back to Earth, yes you'll need to read Threshold but Blue Beetle doesn't really do anything in that series except freak out around a Green Lantern and sit on a ledge and contemplate life.

    6. Guess I will stick with the solo blue beetle thanks...btw have you read sword and sorcery:amethyst and vibe?? They were surprisingly really good

    7. Vibe yes and I loved the first arc but by the end I really couldn't get behind it anymore........ It got too weird. As for Gem World I looked at the first issue only and passed.

  2. Idea for both Cyborg and Shazam...might fail but could be epic. Cyborg and the Metal Men have a 3 part miniseries, along with the Shazam family. they collide in the first issue of wait for it*drum rolls* Cyborg/Shazam: Science and Magic. As Dr.Sivana works with a new partner(Mr.Mind) to create a giant robot from planns stolen from the Red Room, Shazam must team up with Cyborg to take down his new enemies!

    1. Now that you mention it they should just go ahead and maks a cyborg/Shazam team up book with Mr mind ,gas men and the sivana family

    2. Exactly! Shazam has a whole plethora of scientific enemies he could team up with cyborg to go up against. Sivana(as the family in the story right now is apparently sick and needed help from magic), the monster society, Mr.Mind, heck even Captain Nazi.
