“Beyond Burnside” Chapter One: The Batgirl you know and love is going global with Eisner Award-winning and New York Times best-selling writer Hope Larson (A Wrinkle in Time, Goldie Vance) and all-star artist Rafael Albuquerque (AMERICAN VAMPIRE). In order to up her game, Babs travels to Japan on a quest to train with the most elite modern combat masters of the East. But when a chance meeting with an old friend puts a target on her back, Batgirl may need to use her new skills to solve a deadly mystery.

Hey, Batgirl's returned! And now she's going to Japan for an indeterminate amount of time! The kids back in Burnside may not be able to tag along, but we will. I think this will be an interesting book, with Hope Larson and Rafael Albuquerque at the helm it is sure to be of high quality. But will it please everyone? Probably not. I remember a time when I'd get excited to see the rare episodes that Batgirl's bike raced across the animated credits for the Batman TV series. Now (according to the Twitterverse) it's like she's the most sacred of Gotham's heroes that must be always at the forefront, and there are very specific ways she must be portrayed. Go figure. If she does her kung-fu detective thing and has a decent amount of compassion, I'll probably be happy with it.
