What do mini subs, the moon and dead fathers have in common?  Well, since you're asking so nicely  I'll tell you.  It turns out that all of those things were in our previous issue of Superman and goddamn was it homeless man standing by some train tracks crazy.  Yeah, I know things are bound to be a little weird with the Eradicator being out and about and being full of the souls of Krypton........ and his liberal view of eating Super Dogs whole and what not, but crazy didn't quite cover what we got from last issue or even this whole story arc in general.  Hopefully this series can get back to where it started with the Super Family being super swell to one another while Jon worked on his new blossoming powers.  Yeah, the family is still the center of attention, what with Superman just trying to keep them safe from the Eradicator, but his involvement just seems to turn everything on its head and leaves me wondering what the hell I just read.  Hopefully that's not the case here.

Explain It!:

Our issue begins where we left off previously, with Superman taking Bibbo's mini-sub with his family aboard up to the moon for safe keeping.......... and yes, I know that is fucking nuts, but not as nuts as what Superman is apparently doing up on the moon.  Yeah, you got the idea that our Man of Steel wanted to keep his family safe and what's safer than the moon, am I right?  The thing is, he's actually putting them in a complex that was built into it.  Now, I don't know how many of you read Batman and Robin Eternal, but there was a part in that book where we saw that Batman setup a Batcave in Europe, which I really enjoyed because having multiple locations full of equipment is just smart.......... plus I just thought the idea was really cool............. Here though, we see that Batman has just straight up lost his goddamn mind because apparently he's setup a Batcave on the moon and our Pre-Flashpoint Superman happened to find out about it when he was tailing the Dark Knight.  I don't know how the information is known, but Superman tells Lois, Jon and us that Batman set this location up so that if any of his more off the wall experiments went tits up, they wouldn't hurt anyone in Gotham or the rest of the world.  So I can go with that, what I can't go with though is all the security that Batman apparently has for this setup is a bunch of robot bats that fly around and then disappear one panel later.  I don't know what they did except allowing us to know that even in space Batman keeps up his bat motif.

Before we can get an idea of what kind of shit Batman is working on in this complex, Eradicator shows up and I'm a bit lost about what the plan was here.  Yeah, I know that the people of Metropolis are safe, but I really thought that Superman putting his family on the moon while Eradicator was momentarily knocked out was purely for their protection........... Like most things in life though I guess I was wrong.  It looks like Superman isn't really up to saving his family again in this issue though because before he could go about beating Eradicator all over his ugly, our villain sucks him up just like he was a dog in a cape.......... and we're left with the Eradicator standing before Lois and Jon.  Yeah, shit looks hairy here, but luckily, Jon is able to keep Eradicator at bay with his heat vision and his hide and seek skills long enough for Lois to find out what happened to the Hell Bat Suit after Batman brought Damian back to life and with this suit she just beats the shit out of Eradicator, but I'm left wondering if Batman fixed the suit up because I'm pretty sure from where we left it, it kills you with prolonged use.

In the end, Lois and Jon continue to fight against the Eradicator's purging, but even with the Hell Bat Suit and Jon's latent powers it seems that the foe will be two much for the mother and son.......... So it's a good thing our Man of Steel got all the ghosts of Krypton on his trolley.......which means he sucked up all the spirits inside of Eradicator, leaving our villain weakened to the point that Superman could creepily as hell crawl out of his mouth....... and with the power of Krypton behind him, our hero will take on the Eradicator one more time to save his family........ The real question is...... What the hell happened to Krypto?!

That's it for this issue of Superman and even though I enjoyed this issue more than the previous, this story arc is getting a bit repetitive with Eradicator trying to suck on Jon and Superman giving him the business.  Yeah, we do get some new developments with Superman getting taken out of the fight in the middle of the book and Lois and Jon having to fend for themselves........ but it was really short-lived and seemed like the only reason we had this issue was to throw some fan service to everyone who read the Batman and Robin series, by adding in the Hell Bat Suit......... Now don't get me wrong, it was cool as hell, but that's all we really had here besides for us all finding out that Batman has way to much time on his hands because having a Batcave on the moon just seems like he's gone a bit too far off the reservation................ Can I say that?  Anyway, Batman's nuts, Superman's Whoopi Goldberg and he's going to dance with Demi Moore and it's all going down on the moon.  With all that aside though, let's get serious for a minute.  This issue of Superman is one of the best looking books I've seen in this series....... and I know that's not much of a compliment with this only being the fifth issue, but it looked amazing and I hope that it continues to look this good.

Bits and Pieces:

This is a pretty standard story from what we've been getting of this Eradicator dilemma....... even the craziness, but with some awesome fan service calling back to the Batman and Robin series and some amazing art all the way through, this issue continues to please and makes us interested in what's to come........ It's just that we gotta get away from some of the nonsense and start finding out what happened to our Super Dog.

7/10

  1. I agree Eric. We get a decent story. This is a very "comic booky" story, but the story is progressing. I like the art a lot and the story is progressing. Hopefully the pay off is worth it. I like Lois less and less every issue of this and Action Comics. She really is a terrible mom. Fighting the Eradocator is not where you try to teach your son a lesson.

    1. It's funny, the New 52 Lois Lane came off terrible and I loved when this one was introduced into continuity because at least we had a Lois that we could all love............ now, it's completely reversed, where I dislike this one and love the New 52 one...... weird.

  2. I mention this in the email I sent, but I’m pretty sure Superman taking his family to the moon because he wanted them to die. If he loses the fight with Eradicator, who is going to save them? Or if the Eradicator breaks the Batcave open, and all the oxygen is sucked out into space, they die. I did really like the explanation of how Superman found the Batcave, though.
I’m surprised at how quickly Superman was sucked into the Eradicator. The Hellbat suit was really cool. I’ve heard of it before, but this is the first time to actually see it.
What is the risk that Superman mentions before he absorbs all the Kryptonian souls? I am excited to see how this series ends!
