Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Five Chapter #38 Review

This is the...?

Written by: Brian Buccellato
Art by: Marco Santucci, Rex Lokus and Wes Abbott
Cover Price: $0.99
Release Date: September 6, 2016

Last chapter of Injustice was so damn good as we got to take a peek at the Earth-1 Universe and a whole bunch of heroes that are gone, but not forgotten in the Injustice one.  It was so nice to see Oliver Queen, Dick Grayson and even the Joker one more time, but we all know it was the calm before the storm that is the ending of this series.  How long will the calm last?  Can we see just one last pool party?  Let's find out...

The issue opens up with hints that we still aren't in Kansas...The Joker and Harley are causing some downtown traffic problems while in Arkham, Batman is fighting off Deathstroke.  The Joker tells Harley that Slade was hired to kill Batman, but we all know that's not happening.

As the crazy duo hit the Metropolis City Limits (isn't that a PBS show?), Harley points into the sky where there is a superhero Battle Royale going on.  Superman fighting Ares and Shazam fighting Black Adam are just two of the battles raging on and the whole thing is epic. The Joker tells Harley that it's all a decoy and sticks with that story even as Doomsday shows up and joins in the fisticuffs.

You see, while all this fighting is going on, the Joker is setting up a little trap for all the super friends and after Harley begs and guesses who is on their side, it's no shock that it's Lex Luthor.  We pretty much saw that he was in charge last issue, but Joker doesn't really seem that concerned with him now. He is more into setting up the "main attraction".

When Batman shows up, I actually thought Joker was going to end this Universe's greatest heroes which would have been bad, but also would have been a disaster for the Injustice one as well.  Of course, that's not what happens because as the big heroes get to Joker, they all are zapped away.  It's easy to guess where and I can't wait to see their reaction when they arrive there.  If we actually do get to see that.

The issue ends with a confused Harley Quinn obviously wondering what the hell just happened and a little "The End...?" to end it.  This can't be it, right?  I want more!!!

This is a very quick read.  There really wasn't much to it...Joker and Harley driving to Metropolis while everyone else beats each other up.  I liked it all enough, but I wish we would have gotten a little bit more.  I will be disappointed if this is indeed the end.  My guess is that we will get another "Year" that deals with the actual events of the game and it will begin right from here.  Crazier things have happened.

Marco Santucci's art was good overall.  His character work was great and the action was intense. However, just like the story, not a ton was going on. It's not Santucci's fault though and he gave his all with what he was given.

Bits and Pieces:

This was a really quick issue that was here to get more of the pieces in place before the end...which may be here.  The story and art were good, not great and I hope that Buccellato is not actually done because this would serve as a bit of a lackluster ending to one of my favorite series.

7.0/10

  1. I've only played the game demo and didn't start reading Injustice until Year 3. Is this hoe the game starts, with them getting zapped to our Earth?

    2. he's asking if the heroes getting zapped to the Injustice Universe is how the game starts...this is very close to what the start of the game is...it seems as if there are going to be 40 issues so we are just about there
