It's time to get back to the ongoing adventures of Frank Laminski, at least that's what he'd have you believe.  Yeah, in old Frankie's mind, he's the hero of the story and Simon and Jessica are trying to tear him down by stealing his power.  We all know that Frank isn't right in the head and that the Phantom Ring is feeding off of his emotions and with that knowledge............. We pretty much know things aren't going to turn out well for the would-be Green Lantern, but that doesn't stop us from screaming at Simon and Jessica to hurry the hell up and take the Phantom Lantern down so that they can go take care of Volthoom before he does something terrible to Rami.  That's exactly where we are right now in the story and hopefully we'll get to see just that.  Let's jump into this issue and see if Simon and Jessica can battle their worst feels in the form of yellow constructs and if they'll be able to get to Rami before Volthoom goes back to getting his revenge on against all Guardians.  Let's check it out.

Explain It!:

Our issue begins and pretty much continues with everything that we've had in the previous couple of issues, where Simon and Jessica are battling Frank or at least his crazy constructs as he cycles through his emotions.  This time around, our heroes are going up against perverted forms of themselves that are relaying to them their worst fears about themselves and with that we get back to where we've been in this series with every issue it seems, with our heroes questioning their abilities as a Green Lantern.  Yeah, Jessica is afraid all the time and Simon's so unsure about himself that he needs to carry a gun.......... it's stuff we've seen for awhile now and just makes this issue feel like filler.

Where the story actually gets interesting is when we jump to Rami and Volthoom, who are having themselves a little chat about what Volthoom is up to and how Frank Laminiski is going to become a bomb if he keeps using the Phantom Ring.  It's funny though because this issue actually starts out with Volthoom going insane as the First Lantern and the Guardians having no other alternative than to have Rami send out his inventions The Green Lantern Rings so that they could hopefully get some backup to stop Volthoom from destroying their home world.  The thing is though, this totally breaks continuity because this would mean that the Green Lanterns were started before the Manhunters, who were created to initially stop the First Lantern............ Where's my continuity?  Hopefully something will come of this where we find out how this makes sense, but as of right now it just irks me.

Eventually, Simon and Jessica overcome their fears and we find out that Rami was the one who initially made Volthoom the First Lantern, thus giving them a connection, but ultimately we don't go anywhere with our heroes because Frank is about to explode.

That's it for this issue of Green Lanterns and I hate to say it, but this issue is just more of the same of what we've been getting every issue and that's a whole lot of nothing.  Yeah, we get some backstory about Volthoom and the creation of the Green Lanterns, but this continuity is wrong because for whatever reason we now completely omit the creation of the Manhunters and it just doesn't make sense to me.  One big plus to this issue though is the fact that it looked great, but even that can't make this issue all that worthwhile because we get to see our heroes being unsure about themselves like we've seen before and we get to see them going after Frank Laminski like we've seen before and ultimately this issue didn't get interesting until the cliffhanger.  Hopefully the next issue picks things up because while I was initially really interested in this arc, I can't help but be bored by what we've been getting lately from this title.

Bits and Pieces:

While this issue looks great, that's about as far as we go with really complimentary things to say about it because again we get the same old things that we keep seeing in this title and we even have ourselves what looks like a continuity flub that really doesn't even feel like it needs to be there.

5.5/10

  1. I don't know much about continuity of the green lanterns, but if your right then this does omit an essential part o the continuity. The sad part is that all it would take to make this wrong right would be for one of the guardians to have said " The Manhunters are not enough to stop him, we need something else" and here comes Rami with the rings. Done.
