I've really been digging how we've been tying together the past and the present with this series over each issue because while originally it seemed like two different books we were getting, it's started to really play well in telling this story and I've found myself more interested than ever with what we've been getting lately.  In our previous "Truth" issue, we saw Wonder Woman crazy as hell as she talked to some snake in her arm, but thankfully it looks like all that is over with now that Etta and Steve have brought Ferdinand to see her........... Hopefully, it's explained well because it would suck just to have crazy for the sake of crazy.  Let's jump into this issue and see what's going on with our hero, especially once she finds out that Barbara Minerva has become Cheetah again.  Let's check it out.

Explain It!:

Our issue begins with........... Well, Wonder Woman's no longer crazy now that Ferdinand has come to see her........ and that's about it with the explanation for it......... So yeah, that kind of sucks.  So yeah, now it's time to get the gang back together, which will be a bit of a chore because Barbara Minerva is Cheetah again and Veronica Cale is taking her someplace so that she can open a doorway to Themyscira for her.  The real bitch of it is, Veronica Cale lied to Barbara in the previous issue about how this time the Cheetah curse would be different since Urzkartaga is gone, but the hunger is still there and if I were Veronica Cale, I'd be watching my damn back because Cheetah wants flesh.

With Cale's plan in order, she directs Colonel Poison to put Godwatch protocols into effect and I'm not quite sure what that means besides the fact that it looks like they have bullets that can actually pierce Wonder Woman, but maybe it just means that they don't need our hero at all anymore now that they have Cheetah in their pocket.

In the end, Etta, Steve, Ferdinand and Wonder Woman show up at Empire Enterprises, where they're met by Doctor Cyber, who gets everyone caught up with her and Wonder Woman's past from a couple of issues ago and really hits home with the idea that all of this is being done because Wonder Woman has ruined lives since she's shown up in man's world, especially the lives of Doctor Cyber and Veronica Cale.  After Ferdinand shuts Doctor Cyber down, by being a bull in a China Shop, the team find the body of Sasha Bordeaux and Etta and Ferdinand go off to make sure that she gets medical attention.  As we leave this issue with Steve and Diana, we see Godwatch protocols go into effect as one of the Poison Brigade shoot Diana through the chest........ looking like she's about to die.

That's it for this issue of Wonder Woman and while I normally really enjoy both story and art in this series, I have to say that both were kind of down in this issue.  Diana, who's been crazy for a bunch of issues now is just magically okay and after that, we stand around and talk about things we already know, just to get to the point where Diana is shot at the end.  With that, the art seemed like it was using a lot of filler as well because we just had panels where are characters were just standing around doing nothing and where I've come to expect nothing but the best of the best out of Liam Sharp's artwork, I found some of this feeling like it was rushed to completion.  So yeah, not a lot going on in this issue besides for Diana not being crazy for no reason whatsoever, Veronica Cale screwing Barbara over and Wonder Woman getting shot at the end.  Yeah, those seem like big things, but not really from the way they were presented here.

Bits and Pieces:

This issue is a bit of a letdown from what we usually get out of this series because both the art and the story seemed to be cluttered with filler of things we've already seen to things that didn't seem to matter at all and the biggest problem I had with this issue is that our hero is just fine now that we need her back in the story with no sign of an explanation about how this could be.

6.2/10

  1. I think I'm done with this book for a while. It's become the last book I read on my list for the week and that's usually a bad sign. It's just too much spinning it's wheels for me.

  2. The solution to every problem in rebirth has been to simply bring someone, to the character in need, from their past, and POOF magically everything is all better ... they're in love again, or no longer crazy, or no longer forgotten ... am I missing something?!

Is that unsatisfying to anybody else or am I just loco?

    1. I'm with you Branden, rebirth was supposed to add hope to this universe, not rewrite the N52, but add elements of the Pre Flashpoint.

  3. So the last few issues with that dumb-as-fuck snake were all just filler... whatta revoltin' development! This series would be so great if Rucka could get the past and present storylines to both be good at the same time. But now that the past is making sense, the present is crap. So frustrating.
