**NON SPOILERS AND SCORE AT THE BOTTOM**

Ooh, a tie-in with Metal! And it’s one of my regularly-reviewed comics! Of course, this crossed over with Aquaman, too, so I shouldn’t be too elated. But I am enjoying this event, and I think I bring a little more positivity to its cross overs compared to those other two manic-depressive shlubs on the site! Which isn’t to say I will like this issue, just that I probably won’t eviscerate it. Or will I??? You’ll have to read my review of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #32 to find out!

Explain It!

I know the Metal crossovers and tie-ins have been formally listed in DC’s house ads, but to be honest, I haven’t paid attention to them. I did read the Batman: The Dawnbreaker one-shot, though, so I was pleasantly surprised the Green Lantern Corps, and Hal Jordan in specific, to be dealing with Dawnbreaker’s existence on Earth-0. Seems the vampiric Lantern Wayne has destroyed Coast City and plunged it into inky darkness, which we know is a sore spot for Hal Jordan. So there’s gonna be a tussle.
It takes place in Dawnbreaker’s pitch black Batcave on his Earth, for some reason, and there we get to see that his trophy room is a bit more sadistic than the one we know of: the skeletons of a Red Lantern (maybe Arkillo?), Sinestro and Hector Hammond on display. I love these allusions to a larger story and history and it set my mind spinning on what those encounters must have been like. Hal is able to get the upper hand for a little while by using his ring as a strobe light, but Dawnbreaker is able to create more differently-colored constructs, so that Hal loses and is dragged to power a multiversal tower with the rest of the felled heroes.
Which might be the most disappointing part of the story, though I suppose it means it was an effective one. It just feels like Hal turned a corner in his powers and understanding of self, but this issue still moved him into the place he needs to be for the next issue of Metal. I don’t know why I should be surprised. The artwork is spectacular and there are some cool concepts, but if you’re following Metal you can probably skip it, and if you’re only following this series then you should definitely skip it. Unless you want to see the oversized skull of Hector Hammond, which I can understand.

Bits and Pieces:

A pretty entertaining issue that has very little impact on the Metal story on a whole. There's something to be said for that. The pencils and color are spectacular, even if much of the book takes place in darkness.

7/10
