DC Comics Best Covers of the Week: October 3, 2018

Heroes on Buildings

That's pretty much it, huh? If it's not going to be a big fight, or a team of heroes squatting, then you might as well throw 'em up on a building against the night sky, and maybe some pounding rain. Maybe it's just a Bat Family thing, but it does seem to work with other characters as well. This week was sort of slim pickings, but you know my guarantee: if they printed five or more covers, I can make a list for that week!

Adventures of the Super Sons #3
Dan Mora
I mean, this is just adorable. Jonathan Kent going up against the creature that killed his father? And with ease! The composition is essentially a triangle, so it works just fine, and the background crowd is rendered distinctly, but the color helps keep it subdued. And plus: it's adorable.

Wonder Woman and Justice League Dark: The Witching Hour #1 variant
Riccardo Federici
This will put you in the proper Halloween mood, won't it? Wonder Woman as the evil witch is a pretty creepy thing, I think owing most to her exaggerated, howling smile. I wonder if this character will get an action figure?

 Green Lanterns #56 variant
Chris Stevens
What is foreshortening? This cover. There's lots of motion happening here, as we catch Simon Baz in a somewhat awkward arc that is expertly-drawn. The background is just intriguing, and if I had one complaint it would be that the meteors to the left crowd the image a little bit and make it unbalanced. But boy, look at that fist!

 Nightwing #50 variant
Jonboy Meyers
Sometimes, when Nightwing does his "Batman thing," he looks better than the Batman. I love how the streets of Gotham City are rendered here, almost ablaze with a blur of lights. Of course, it's a bit of a lay-up in terms of promoting the darker, foreground image, but I don't need artists to challenge themselves. Just make great covers.

Batman #56 variant
Francesco Mattina
Get your minds out of the gutter. You know this is an awesome image that you would have wanted a poster of in your tweenaged bedroom.

  2. Not a big fan of the foils, Reggie? I'll admit most were pretty boring, but I really liked the Green Lanterns #56 foil cover.
