After looking forward to G. Willow Wilson's debut on Wonder Woman for so long, I have been a bit let down since it began.  A generic story to start things off and subpar art is not the way to come out of the gates, but it only takes one issue to turn it all around.  Is this that issue?  Let's find out...

The issue opens with Wonder Woman continuing to question herself while Ares and her fight about true justice.  This already feels like old hat after a couple issues and this is no different.  While this is bad enough, the turn that Ares takes after finding a baby amongst the destruction he caused might be worse.

Yep, Ares realizes the error of his ways in an after-school special kind of way with cheesy dialogue that could have been straight from "Sarah T. - Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic" and then leaves.  Yep, he just floats up into the sky to leave Wonder Woman to fight her battles alone.

Diana is joined by Etta who can't answer the questions Wonder Woman is asking before getting shot in the chest...though the art makes it look like it's in the head.  The art then picks up a bit while the dialogue remains eye-rolling and it all combines into more generic "what is war" storytelling.

Continuing on, Wonder Woman decides to go talk to Ares who may have flown up, but not away and is just hanging out in the clouds.  Wonder Woman tries to convince the God of War to clean up what he started, but he doesn't seem too interested...yet?

The issue ends with Steve Trevor being led by his mythical captors to their leader and I am pretty sure that the cliffhanger is meant to be shocking and big, but its neither...the art doesn't help things here either.

Yea, it is a bad sign when I'm liking each issue of this run less and less and I pretty much hated this issue.  Hated may be too harsh, though, as I just don't care what's going on in this series right now.  G. Willow Wilson is giving readers a cliched and boring story that is well under her usual quality level and I just don't understand it. There just isn't much of a story going on here at all.  Maybe she is struggling with the character?  Maybe she is focusing too much on the political angle of war?  I don't know, but I am sure of one thing...I don't like it.

The art is bad in this book, but while that was my main gripe two issues ago, the writing is just as much to blame for a lackluster start.

Bits and Pieces:

This book just doesn't feel right.  It's boring and generic and I can't recommend it to anyone.  I'm not sure what is going wrong, but I've come to expect so much more from G. Willow Wilson.  I still have hope she will turn it around, but until that happens, I can't recommend this book at all.

4.0/10

  1. G. Willow Wilson is not a huge name that goes hand in hand with quality writing. Kamala and Diana are worlds apart and it shows in the end product. Rebirth started badly and slow for Diana. Azzarello had the perfect pitch for Wonder Woman but he was shunned for making her a war machine and not a housewife.

    1. Whatever happened to Cary Nord's art. Couldn't it be the inker's fault.
