Get Off My Plane!
The mystery behind how and why Cadmus is using the powers of our heroes and giving them to nobodies.... and Kite-Man continues this issue as our heroes go hunting down Lady Vic to find out her connection to this superpowers cabal. Also, we have Superboy in space.... who should have died but was teleported aboard the spaceship of Starfire's sister, Blackfire. Let's jump into this Hypertime/Elseworld story to see if this team feels any better than this issue than it has before. Let's check it out.
For this issue, we don't do much to figure out more about our Cadmus/superpowers mystery even though we have a story being told on two fronts with Donna Troy, Red Hood, and Raven going after Lady Vic before she can flee the country after murdering the doctor in charge of the prison experiments in the previous issue and while I'm a little disappointed that we ultimately don't go anywhere in this chapter, I will say that the dynamic of these three heroes teaming up with Nightwing back at the command console leading the group actually worked better for me than anything we've seen before. Yeah, Jason Todd is still a jerk at times but with these people around him he's more of an endearing/sarcastic jerk and I'm guessing that this team just doesn't work for me when Connor and Jason are both around.
As for Connor, he's been taken captive aboard Blackfire's ship and while we don't get a lot of explanation about her motives, it seems pretty obvious that's a part of this secret plan that's giving people Titan superpowers........ even Lady Vic's unnamed bodyguards got themselves a taste of the Beast Boy powers, but all we get out of our Superboy/Blackfire section of the book is some weird sexual tension and Superboy having his powers tested..... but since we still don't know why Connor's powers have gone wonky, this just comes off as a weird part of this issue.
All in all, the art remains strong in this seven-issue series but there's a real lack of progression in that the only thing that got us any forward momentum is the idea that the Titans have tracked a signal to space, which will undoubtedly get our heroes to find Connor....... who they're strangely not all that concerned about this issue, but beyond that, it's just big ol' action scenes that drive this issue from beginning to close and while this teaming of characters was different and showed me a better side of Red Hood on the team it just felt like a bit of padding to a story that I feel we're still left in the dark about..... which is a shame for so early in the series.
Bits and Pieces:
While you'll get some amazing art in this issue and a look at Jason Todd on this team that comes off more like an endearing ass hat instead of a "what the hell is he doing here?" ass hat, there isn't too much forward momentum in this story since this issue seems to be all about action and nothing else. Yeah, there's some fun to be had but I was looking for more by the end since we still don't really know what's going on or the rules of this superpower problem.
Okay I have a tangential question and since I don't read Aquaman this is the only place I can think of to ask it. Is Garth/Tempest currently appearing anywhere? And what of his marriage to Dolphin and their son who I assume either doesn't exist or is still dead?
ReplyDeleteCurrently Garth is doing shit. I'd like to think he's coach of the swim team at Titans Academy but who knows. As for past Garth continuity, in a world where "Everything Matters" I'd like to say that the continuity is there but judging from everything we've seen from Aquaman, it doesn't appear like anything pre-New 52 matters to the Aquaman family of books and characters.
