Kirby's Epic Yarn

Jerry Ordway and Steve Rude give us a Jack Kirby tribute wrapped around an Adventures of Superman issue.  Superman may be on the marquee, but the star here is OMAC the One Man Army Corps.

Superman is called into action by STAR LABS to stop an ansteroid heading on a collision course with Metropolis.  The asteroid, Kurtzberg-17, is the first nod to Kirby. When he goes into space to investigate, he finds the asteroid and a whole lot more.  A transforming (or maybe just forming?) robot, kryptonite, villains from the future and OMAC  There is so much going on.

Like I said, OMAC is the star and he is pretty cool.  Those not familiar with the original Jack Kirby creation of the character may be a bit confused.  I was one of those people.  However, I liked what I was reading so I did a little research and got up to speed.  I'm glad I did.  It's all here; Brother Eye, the Global Peace Agency and Sandor Skuba.

In the end, the Heroes prevail (don't they always?), but Ordway gets to right some wrongs and let OMAC and Brother Eye save the day.  It's a good story that comes right out of the 70's which makes it a little bizarre getting it digitally. Bizarre and awesome.

Speaking of awesome, Steve Rude's art is just that.  It's a tribute to Kirby and is so good that it should not come with a $0.99 price tag.  This is by far the best art that Adventures of Superman has had.

One thing that is bizarre is the solicit.  It reads,

"In the series' final chapter, legends Jerry Ordway and Steve Rude tell the story of Superman's first encounter with a hero from the future--OMAC: the One-Man Army Corps."

The Series' final chapter? Say it ain't so.  I tried to get some information from editor, Alex Atone, but got nothing as of this time.  Solicits are sometimes misleading so I hope it is just a mistake.

Update: My man, Martin Gray, from the awesome, too DANGEROUS for a girl! confirmed that Adventures of Superman was indeed cancelled and being replaced by the new Infinite Crisis digital comic in May.  It's such a shame as Adventures is such a positive and fun comic in a landscape that seems to be void of such.  I will miss it.

Bits and Pieces:

Adventures of Superman #51 is Jerry Ordway and Steve Rude's tribute to Jack Kirby.  It's more OMAC than Superman and I liked it all the same.  It's good fun with great art and I'd love for the story to continue.

8.5/10
