Weird Science Best of DC Comics 2014 Awards

And the Winner is...

2014 was a pretty good year for DC Comics.  We got the end of Forever Evil, Batman's Zero Year and three new weekly books.  Damian Wayne returned from the dead and Charles Soule jumped ship to Marvel.  Here at Weird Science, we added two writers (everyone say hi to Jody and Daniel) and continued with our unfortunate promise to review every damn book.  I'd like to take this time to thank everyone who put up with our awful puns, 80's movie references and song lyrics.  It still makes me laugh that a short, old guy and a tall, headband wearing guy could write anything that anyone sane would want to read, but we appreciate it so much.  I don't want to start crying like a little baby, so let's get on with our picks for the best of 2014.

Best Writer

Jim's Choice:

Kyle Higgins-For almost the whole year, the highlight of my Saturday was reading Kyle Higgins' Batman Beyond 2.0.  While that just makes me sound pathetic, it has more to do with Kyle's writing than my lack of a social life.  Seriously, if you have any interest at all in the Batman Beyond or Batman: TAS Universes, this book was made for you.  His stories and characterizations were not only true to the source material, but made it even better.  Everything made sense and Higgins' love of Batman Beyond came through on every page.  Sadly, the book was cancelled in November and while I'm a hopeful man, I don't think it's coming back anytime soon.

Eric's Choice:

Geoff Johns-While Forever Evil might have started in 2013, it's really the ending that took place last year that puts Geoff Johns on the top of my list of best writers.  Hell, even the aftermath stuff was top notch and it really changed the dynamic of the Justice League enough to keep it interesting and kept it the same enough that I didn't feel alienated or wondering what the hell was going on in the world of DC and our heroes.  It's just a cool time to be reading Justice League and it's all because of the vision of Geoff Johns with his off the wall ideas about the team we all love...............Now I'm sure his other titles are good but it's pure Justice League that puts Geoff at the top of the list for me.

Jody's Choice:

Tom Taylor-I have been reading injustice since year one and have loved almost every issue along the way. Despite the universe being huge, Tom didn’t skip out on the small moments between characters. People also gave this guy some crap when he took over the Earth 2 after Robinson, but in all honesty, I liked his stories on earth 2 more than Robinson’s. Did Earth 2 get really gloomy really fast? YUP! But that doesn’t mean he can’t give us a fun ride into it.

Daniel's Choice:

Scott Snyder- I've always been a big fan of Geoff Johns' work in the DC universe but in 2014 I couldn't help but feel that Scott Snyder really hit it out of the park. Geoff is a staple of DC Comics but Snyder really showed with the Zero Year story arc what he can do. Batman's early years in the New 52 continuity was something I was really excited to see and even with the occasional weak spots  the story still managed to hold up as one of my favorites. Now he's in to the Endgame arc and I can't wait to see what he pulls out next for the Caped Crusader. Aside from that, Snyder managed to put out some great books on the Vertigo imprint and I am insanely pumped to see what Snyder brings in 2015.

Best Artist

Jim's choice:

Howard Porter- I love me some Howard Porter.  When Justice League 3000 was announced I was skeptically curious, but then I saw Porter's art and I was sold.  Jody stole my thunder a bit (below), but he is dead on.  If this crazy Justice League would have been drawn in a "normal" way, it wouldn't have been half as good.  It also wouldn't have made sense in the book.  Luckily, Porter is one smart cookie and drew everything in such an awesome way.  It's not just the League, either.  His villains are so imaginative and unique and his futuristic settings are perfect.  However, nothing could prepare me for his Booster Gold and Blue Beetle.  They may have just arrived in the book, but they sealed the deal for me.

Eric's Choice:

Dale Eaglesham-While I don't want to say that Cullen Bunn's great work on villains wasn't a selling point for me on Sinesto, it was really Dale Eaglesham's amazing artwork that sold me on the book.  I'm a terrible artist, so it's not beyond reasoning to me that what these great artists do is just wizardry.  So if you can get behind that concept than Dale Eaglesham in 2014 with his work on Sinestro put him up there with Gandolf the White for me and I really hope we get to see him work on more books in 2015.  Definitely the best Sinestro I've ever seen and he somehow added a scope to the world he worked on more than anyone else I saw last year.

Jody's Choice:

Howard Porter-I love the Justice League 3000 series going on. Usually a series like that would have me drawn in mostly by the story, but this time around its both a balance of that and the Art. The redesigns of the characters, the expressions on peoples faces, this whole future looks so fascinating. If they had one of the the guys who do normal Justice League art, I don't think I would be as interested. This art just fun, that's the best way to describe it.

Daniel's Choice:

Greg Capullo-
I can't lie--I'm in a love affair with the main Batman title in the New 52 DC Comics universe. As great as Snyder's writing is, the story wouldn't have the mood it does if not for the phenomenal art drawn by Greg Capullo. Gotham City is a dark place and Batman is the Dark Knight. The representations of this drawn by Capullo have been the visual highlight of my weekly comic book reading.

Best Book

Jim's Choice:

Wonder Woman-It's fitting that this was my favorite book of the year, but yet I couldn't think of one issue to single out.  BrianAzzarello's whole run was just that...a Whole.  Every issue built on the last  which made it one of the hardest books to just jump into, but made it great to those who were there from the beginning.  Azzarello built his story on a solid Greek Mythological foundation and ran with it.  Everything made complete sense; Wonder Woman's origin, her becoming the new God of War, the Battle for Olympus, the Sons of Themyscira...everything.  And then there was the supporting cast.  Hera, Strife, Hermes, Orion, Zola, Baby Zeke and I'm just getting started.  Every character was so fleshed out including the villain, The First Born.  The whole year built to the final battle and everything Azzarello setup paid off in spades.  Then there is the art.  Cliff Chiang and Goren Sudzuka's made this book look like a Greek fresco come to life.  The character work was incredible, often telling the story more than mere words could.  I'm going to stop now because I'm starting to sound like a preteen girl gushing about One Direction, but this book is my favorite of the year and one of the best of all-time.  It's really that good.

Eric's Choice:

Justice League-I can't say that I was initially a fan of the Amazo Virus story when it first started but I began feeling that old itch that either means I need to wash more or I'm really jonesing for a story and I have to say that Justice League is the one book that I can't wait to dive into each month when it comes out.  I said this with Geoff Johns taking the best writer slot above but his work on Forever Evil and what that meant for the Justice League team really added a new aspect of the story that kept it fresh and constantly makes me wonder what will go down in the pages of Justice League.  Now it's obvious that a book featuring our favorite heroes would be one of the best books out there but this year began to topple the dominoes of the Rube Goldberg machine that is Geoff Johns' storytelling and where we end up doesn't matter, it's the journey to get there that we all want to see.

Jody's Choice:

The Multiversity-I was pumped when this miniseries was first announced, thinking it would be a series of events with the heroes of 52 worlds. I was a little nervous when it was revealed they were gonna mostly be one shots, but as per usual Grant Morrison blew my mind once more. I count the days till the next Multiversity title, and what new world we’ll be exploring this month. From the violent trippy world  of Pax Americana to the classical fun Thunderworld of Captain Marvel, this book has earned title of the best this year.

Daniel:

Batman-
Is this really a surprise? The creative team on the book is an amazing duo that really know how to tell a story and their love for the characters they work with really shows through in a way you don't see on many books. With the New 52 reboot Snyder and Capullo have had a chance to rewrite Bat-history and create moments and tales that will carry onto the next generation and stand alongside stories like Year One and The Long Halloween.

Best Single Issue

Jim's Choice:

Batman Beyond 2.0 #28-I'm starting to get scared that everyone reading this article will think that I am being paid off, but I can't help it, I love Batman Beyond 2.0.  While every issue was above average to say the least, this one was incredible.  I reread the issue and my original review for it and I still agree with myself, I still can't find anything wrong with this issue.  I gave it a perfect 10 then and would do it again.  Through the whole series, there was the mystery of what caused the rift between Dick Grayson and Bruce Wayne.  Terry had been stuck in the middle and we finally get answers.  I actually still hate to spoil it because it is so big.  Humongous.  We find out that years earlier, Dick and Barbara got back together and it looked like they may get married. Then Barbara finds out she's pregnant...with Bruce's baby!!!  Holy crap.  It was always hinted that they had a relationship, but Holy crap!  Then while Dick beat the crap out of Bruce, Barbara was attacked and stabbed in the stomach.  It still gives me chills.

Eric's Choice:

Forever Evil #6-Now a lot of people will think I'm crazy that I'd put this issue over Forever Evil's finale where Mazahs was wrecking house and the Anti-Monitor showing up but it was this issue that finally got me behind the New 52 Captain Cold and just the "holy shit" factor of this issue was amazing.  The Other was murdered by Black Manta, Captain Cold froze and shattered Johnny Quick's leg and really it was something to finally see the Injustice League coming together and kicking some Earth 3 ass.......Oh and the death of Nightwing.............kinda.  My eyes were glued to the page and I found myself reading this issue over and over again..........Mostly because the finale was late coming out but it's something that I might have to go back and read again now.

Jody's Choice:

Wonder Woman #35-I might have come into the run as Azzerello was on his way out, but I decided to read through the whole run. This issue not only was a satisfying conclusion to the war against the First born, but a satisfying conclusion to the run. It built into this epic final battle with this major threat, but then when he’s down and out we see Wonder Woman talk to her human companion…skiing the goddess who inhabits her to let her stay for her son…in a way it came full circle. At the beginning, we saw Hera loveless, then we see what happens when a god is abandoned and without love. How better to end that theme with Wonder Woman asking Athena to leave Zola so Zeke could be loved, unlike the monster that they just ended. It was epic, emotional…and for lack of a better word…a Wonder.

Daniel's Choice:

Batman '66 #49- I love the concept of Batman '66 in the regard that it really gives off a chance to show what the 1966 Batman TV series could have been, had the budget been larger and the technology greater. What stood out to me though about Batman '66 #49 was the focus on Batgirl--a character I really enjoyed in the 1966 TV series and felt didn't get nearly enough airtime. While there were a lot of big issues that came out this year; dark and emotional with everlasting consequences, it was nice to read a well done issue this air that had a great presentation with a nice story and really just got to the point. What can I say? I'm a sucker for camp.

Biggest Moment

Jim's Choice:

Barbara's Pregnant with Bruce's Baby-I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but this was the biggest moment for me.Batman Beyond 2.0 was all about relationships, but the big question had been what tore the Dynamic Duo apart.  Could it have been any bigger?  I'm a huge Dick Grayson fan and this moment made me want to punch the shit out of Batman.  Batgirl was pregnant with Batman's baby?!?  I said it before, but Holy Crap.  Then, just as I kind of wrapped my head around the idea, Barbara is attacked in an alleyway and stabbed in the stomach.  Talk about an emotional roller coaster.

Eric's Choice:

Black Hand Telling The Source Wall To Rise-Now this is a relatively new development and maybe it makes this list because of how fresh it is in my mind but man was it a OMG! moment.  Hell I had to put the book down and tell my girlfriend about it as she looked at me with her dead non comic book reading eyes........... Yeah, she might think I'm an idiot.  My dysfunctional relationship aside, this was an amazing moment that rivaled Geoff Johns' final Green Lantern issue.  So much fun and even though shit seems like it might get weird in the Lantern world after Convergence, we'll always have this moment to remember and to salivate over.

Jody's Choice:

The Anti-Monitor Returns-It was close between this and Lex taking down his own earth 3 counterpart, but I chose this because of the implications. I was born after the Crisis on Infinite Earths, and as I grew up I only heard the rumors of how powerful a foe the Anti-Monitor was. I first experienced some of that power during the Green Lantern Animated Series, where he was the antagonist for the second half of the show. When I saw that, it confirmed what I was told throughout my life about him. When the new 52 began, I was afraid nothing would be as terrifying or as powerful as Brainiac or the First Born…I thought the time of the Anti-Monitor was over…I was wrong. The time of the Anti-Monitor…is returning.

Daniel's Choice:

The Return of Dick Grayson- I have never made a secret of my love of Dick Grayson under the mantle of Nightwing and when that aspect of his life was abandoned I was pretty torn apart. My pain subsided when it was announced that Grayson would be starring in his own series, called just that. While not the moment with the most consequences by any means, it definitely felt like a tiny victory, even if I long to see the return of Nightwing proper.

Biggest News Story

Jim's Choice:

The DC Cinematic Universe-I'm sure that this one is going to be unanimous.  What could have been bigger this year than finding out that DC actually has a plan for their movies and it's actually awesome!  Batman v Superman sounds awesome, but that's just the beginning.  Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern...I want them all now.  I'm sure those in Marvel Land laugh at DC playing catch up, but a Cinematic Universe with all my favorite heroes running around, stopping bad guys is a fanboys wet dream.

Eric's Choice:

The DC Cinematic Universe-Since I live in an underground bunker waiting for the end of days to come about, I sometimes miss some of the news that comes out about DC Comics and the other media our heroes encompass but that doesn't mean I'm freaking dead and didn't hear the praise and dancing in the streets the day that DC finally decided to tell us that their superheroes were coming to the big screen and not in a dopey "they're the only ones in their universe" kind of way.  The DC Universe is a big place and they finally decided that making money was something they wanted to do.........So BAM!  All of our childhood talks about a combined universe has been made real and it's something that I can't wait to see...........Especially if it's nothing like Superman Returns and Green Lantern.  DC has had a problem with their movies in the past and I can only hope that they're studying what Marvel did so that they can either follow suit or improve.  It's a new day boys and girls and we can finally have our heroes on the big screen and hopefully forget about that happening in the 90's.

Jody's Choice:

The DC Cinematic Universe-We love comics, yes we do! But unfortunately our world is pretty much run by the other forms of
media. Since 2008 MARVEL has been making movies of epic proportions, but this year DC said NO MORE.They announced their slate of movies and they have some heavy hitters. Batman vs. Superman, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and that's just the first few. Its time DC stood up to the Marvel cinematic universe and show them that they can make movies too!

Daniel:

The DC Cinematic Universe- With my pick, it's unanimous--the DC Cinematic Universe was the biggest news story of 2014. Despite the fact that I feel it's too little too late to compete with Marvel I can't help but be excited for the doors this news opens. From Batman vs. Superman to the Justice League film to the inevitable return of Green Lantern to film, it's hard for someone who grew up watching and reading this characters to not leap in excitement about the possibility of seeing all of DC's biggest characters in all of their live action glory.

Biggest Disappointment

Jim's Choice:

The September Futures End Event-I have been pretty vocal about the whole September Event thing in general, but this one took the cake.  In fact, I hate writing event without quotes around it because this hardly seemed like one.  This has nothing at all to do with the weekly book (don't get mad at me Jody), just the September tie-in issues.  Actually, that is just it...not all of the issues tied into the Futures End story at all.  I'm still confused with what the "Event" was trying to accomplish.  I actually was going to write an article about just that and contacted five different writers and asked them how DC described what it was all about.  I pretty much got five different answers and all I could gather was they were told to write future what-if stories that didn't have to tie-in to anything.  Yes, some of the stories did, Green Arrow for example, but most did not.  Hardly an event, if you ask me.  And don't get me started on the 3-D cover gimmick!

Eric's Choice:

Robin Rises: Alpha #1-Now if anyone out there has had the misfortune of reading anything I put up on this site, you might have come across an article I wrote where I talked about keeping Damian dead.  To some of you this might sound like blasphemy while others might be doing that awful "raise the roof" act.  It seems that for everyone I talk to it's really a toss up whether they like Damian Wayne or despise him.  I'm the former.  I love Damian Wayne and when I wrote the article about keeping him dead, I was doing so because I wanted to keep his memory pure and allow his death to be another facet to Batman's mythology.  Well he's back and while I'm happy about it, I really didn't care for the title that brought him back to the Batman world and showcased the fact that he had superpowers instead of making it a heartfelt emotional return that it should have been.  Damian is back and I hope that his future stories this year will be something that will allow me to forget the awful confusing way that he came back to us in the first place.

Jody's Choice:

The Unlucky 13 series-When discussing it with friends, I call the 13 series that got cancelled as the Unlucky 13. No comic should ever be cancelled when they have the potential for greatness. Aquaman and his team looked good on paper, but the name and personalities needed to be fleshed out. Klarion just had a bad writer, but the art was neat. Swamp thing and Batwoman might have had longer runs than most on the list, but they were just as good as Superman and Batman’s runs. Why cancel lantern books even though they sell more? This was just unlucky for these series, and though their runs might be ending, we can hope one day the characters will grace the pages once more.

Daniel's Choice:

The Cancelation of Nightwing- When I first got back into reading comics when the New 52 first launched one of the books that caught my attention the fastest was Nightwing, written by Kyle Higgins. Fast forward to Forever Evil and the news that the Nightwing title was being canceled--I was crushed. While Nightwing doesn't hold the same notoriety as Batman, nor is his gallery of rouges  as big, the character left a lot of potential to grow an amazing series that I feel was taken before it's time. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes though there is a silver lining--the New 52 series and Forever Evil gave the character enough recognition that Dick Grayson now has his own title and it appears that Nightwing will be appearing in the new Teen Titans TV series.

What We're Looking Forward to in 2015

Jim's Choice:

The Post Convergence DCU-Please don't think I mean the Convergence Event (man I hate all these Events) because I'm still confused about what the hell that is.  No, I can't wait to see what happens afterwards.  You can't deny that come June, the DCU will look a bit different.  Will there be a New New 52?  Will we go back to Pre-Flashpoint?  Will it be a combination of both? Nobody knows, but I can tell you, I can't wait to see.  My guess is we go back to business as usual, but that still leaves a lot of questions.  Will we get some new Lanterns books?  Will we get the Shazam and Cyborg books Eric has wished for?  I can't wait.

Eric's Choice:

Announcing Titles That We Want!-I was a little upset when the DC announced their latest titles and Shazam, Cyborg and The Doom Patrol weren't on them and yet we had a bunch of titles that were cancelled almost immediately.  So for 2015 I want to see some stuff like the characters that I mentioned getting their own titles, the return of Blue Beetle to the forefront in DC Comics and the mystery of where Vibe disappeared to after Forever Evil solved.  Oh and somehow have the future that we've seen in Futures End erased so that our Earth 2 characters can save their world and get their own solo titles as well.  Pretty much like Jody, I want more comics and I want them to last.

Jody's Choice:

MORE COMICS!-But seriously though, I can't wait for more of Future's End, Earth 2, the new Injustice run, Convergence, but the biggest thing I can't wait for is the beginning of the Anti-Monitor/Darkseid War. Two of the greatest enemies of the Justice League, coming together to have a throw down. This war I feel might be the thing that pulls Earth 2 to Earth 1, and though I don't want the gloomy future to happen, I do want to see my Wonders team up with the Justice League to stop these two terrible titans of terror.

Daniel's Choice:

Batman Eternal: Year 2- I know for the most part I must sound like a broken record when it comes to my love of Batman, but Batman Eternal  has been a phenomenal series and when I heard that there was a second year of it coming, I got pretty excited--despite what I may have previously said in conversation. Weekly books can be a tricky thing but this is one of those series that found a way to do it just right.

So, there is our picks for the Best of 2014.  I'm sure that everyone reading this will get angry at some (or all of Eric's) and  agree with others (or all of mine), but what I like the most about the list is that it's so different.  All four of us are huge DC Comic fans and there is something for each of us and everybody in general.  Again, thanks for reading our reviews and articles over the year and we're looking forward to giving you even more in 2015.  Maybe even a podcast if we can stop being so damn lazy.  Then you can really get annoyed with us!  Please, let us know your picks in the comments, we'd love to see what you guys think.

Thanks for a great year...Jim

    1. I can't disagree with any of those. Why does Nightwing seem like it was canceled so long ago? I miss that book.

also, why doesn't the Joker coming back feel bigger? I didn't pick it and I read and review Batman. In fact, it isn't even in my top 5 biggest moments.
