That's the Way I (Kinda) Like It

I have really enjoyed the first couple issues of Wonder Woman '77.  Marc Andreyko has really done a great job of capturing the feel of the show while the art has nailed the 70's look and Lynda Carter hotness.  Watching Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor fight hypnotized disco dancers while trying to protect a Russian Doctor has been as fun as it sounds.  This issue is the third and final chapter of this arc and while its good, it may just be a save the worst for last kind of moment.

Last issue's cliffhanger had Steve Trevor under the disco mind control of Silver Swan.  We start right up this week with Steve pointing his gun at Wonder Woman and that is not a lame 70's pickup line.  It only takes a little lasso action and Steve is back to normal, but every other person in the joint wants their hides.  While Wonder Woman deals with the Doctor and Silver Swan, Steve is left to deal with the Russkies (his words).

While Steve makes like Chuck Norris in a white leisure suit, Wonder Woman fights Silver Swan's two backup singers.  It's a pretty good fight that highlights some of Diana's best moves.  However, I did think that Wonder Woman's dialogue was off a bit in this scene.  When Steve Trevor frees the dancers from the mind control, it's down to Wonder Woman and Silver Swan.  After Swan uses her sonic attack to send Wonder Women (and some Abba and Bee Gees records) flying, Diana attacks with Wax.  It's a fitting way to end the battle.  After Wonder Woman ducks away for a quick wardrobe change, her and Steve put on their boogie shoes and take a trip to funky town.

I liked this issue enough, but I am a little bit worried.  I mentioned in my first review of this series that I was glad that Marc Andreyko didn't confuse the awesomeness of this 70's show with the camp of a Batman '66.  Up until this issue, he nailed it by concentrating on the fun of the time period and let everything come naturally.  This issue seemed to push things too much to the point of feeling forced.  That is why this was my least favorite issue of this opening arc.

Another thing that wasn't as strong this issue was the art.  Matt Hardy and Richard Ortiz do an okay job this week, but okay is not good compared with the first two issues.  We seemed to lose a bit of the Lynda Carter likeness this week and that's a shame because it made me smile in the first two issues.  Also, we get some poor transitions which is not a surprise when two artists work on such a short issue.

Bits and Pieces:

Wonder Woman '77 is not a bad issue, it's just not as good as the first two of the arc.  The story wraps itself up nicely, but Marc Andreyko tries too hard to force the laughs and Matt Haley and Richard Ortiz's art is pretty average.  After two strong issues, it's a shame the arc ends with a bit of a downer.  Don't get me wrong, I still liked it, I just didn't love it.

7.5/10

    1. I sent notes to Marc Andreyko and editor, Alex Antone and I'll let you know what I find out. I want to know too...I was really enjoying this book. Right now, it seems they are going back to Sensation Comics for a bit.

    2. I did see that the first three chapters are being collected as Special #1 and isn't coming out until April 29! That doesn't seem to suggest any new chapters coming out any time soon.
