Punching Your Future Self In The Face

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

In the last issue of Futures End, Brainiac was still trying to dome up Manhattan and take it off to........ wherever Brainiac keeps his stuff.  Don't worry though all you New Yorkers, our heroes came through........ Well, The Atom came through and disconnected Engineer from the Brainiac skull ship stopping Manhattan from being collected.  Let's see what this issue holds, like if Superman is going to Superman up and stop getting his ass knocked around or what's up with Mister Terrific and his Brainiac bromance.  Let's check it out.

Explain It!:

Our issue begins with Lois Lane finding the knocked out Superman.  He comes to and Lois asks him twenty questions about where he's been, what's he's been doing, why he left and you know what?  We never really get an answer out of him and all this portion of the comic really does is let us know that Superman plans on getting back in the game........ just not this issue.

Brainiac on the other hand knows how to get shit done.  With his ship's connection severed, he can't collect Manhattan like he'd like to but it's Brainiac and he has himself a Plan B.  The device that connected Manhattan to the above ship is a goddamn transformer and makes itself into controls so Brainiac can simply fly this island wherever he likes.......... I guess it needs to warm up though because getting his handlebars established is about as far as we get with that.

The majority of this comic has to do with Terrifitech and what Tim Drake and Plastique are doing.  After walking over dead bodies to get through the place, they eventually come across Key and Coil, who you'll remember started working for Mister Terrific after Batman Beyond botched their heist.  Again, like the Superman section this bit doesn't really do much until right at the end when the Plastique/Brother Eye monster shows up and this motley crew has to take it out.  Really though, this whole part didn't do anything until that monster showed up and it kind of came off like the whole thing was just there so they could attempt to make a Dick Grayson dick joke............ Now I love any opportunity to say something like "I love Dick" or "Dick's all up in that", but here it just comes off forced and unneeded and it makes me think that's what everyone else is saying about my own remarks......... I guess it's time to stop with the dick double entendres.

In the end, it turns out that Plastique was the best person to take on her evil future doppelganger because of paradoxes and stuff.......... Future Plastique can't kill past Plastique or it will never exist....... Yeah, it makes sense and it was pretty cool and our future monster does a swan dive out of Terrifitech........ Well, a forced swan dive.  As the issue closes we have ourselves one hell of a flip flop.  Here we've seen how in awe Mister Terrific is of Brainiac and even feels special that it chose to communicate with him due to his intellect but on the last page as he sees Brainiac trying to do a sweet wheelie with Manhattan, he gets all remorseful....... What's up with that?  Dude acts like he's never heard of Brainiac before.

That's it for this issue of Futures End and besides for Brainiac coming up with a Plan B on how he's going to steal Manhattan and the possible death of the evil future Plastique, the book really didn't do much.  Just a lot of work so we know that Superman isn't going to stay down and the crew in Terrifitech making a dick joke.  On top of all that, I wasn't really a fan of the art in this issue either.  I don't know if I can really put a finger on what it was or come up with a word that describes it, the only way my brain keeps shouting it to me is, it wasn't that strong.  Maybe that makes sense to you, maybe it doesn't, all I know is that I wasn't a fan.  I will tell you, even though this wasn't a strong issue to me, I'm really excited for where it's leading up to.  See you next week where hopefully some more things go down and I can stop being a dick about the art.

Bits and Pieces:

We've got a whole huge story to tell with the final issues of Future End and somehow this issue uses the majority of it's pages to tell the least interesting stuff.  I don't get it, maybe they needed a filler issue but the important things in this story seem like they could have been addressed during a more important issue........ or at least one with a little more going on.  Even being let down though, I'm still excited about what this series will end with and I don't think that this will deter anyone who's still reading.  We're in for the long haul.

5.5/10
