Fanboy Theories: What was Thomas Wayne up to?

2 Paths, 1 Cave
If you watched the most recent episode of Gotham, you would take a better look inside of Thomas Wayne's secret lair. He had a large computer, bullet proof vest, guns, and pints of blood. If it wasn't obvious, Thomas had been doing some shady stuff, but the question remains: What was the intent? Was Thomas Wayne the good hearted man that Lucius Fox has painted? Or is he someone with a more diabolical goal? While most people want to believe that the Waynes are good, stand-up people, I wouldn't put it past the writers of the show to throwing this screwball(I MEAN THE DOOR HAS A FRIGGIN' DEVIL HEAD ON IT) In today's Fanboy Theory, we are going to take a look at the two things that the lair implies. Lets take a look...

Good: The First Vigilante
The more likely option of the two, Thomas Wayne could have been the very first masked vigilante in not just Gotham, but in the history of the show's universe. When it comes to skills, I picture him kind of being like the original Crimson Avenger. To those who don't know, the Crimson Avenger is actually DC's first masked hero, a year before Batman was conceived. He was a billionaire, who was quite charitable, and had a very quiet personal life...sounds an awful lot like Dr.Wayne. His primary weapons in the beginning was two guns, and with the exception of the color red, was a pretty normal vigilante, in comparison to the themed ones like the BAT man and GREEN ARROW.
The only issue with this being the case is the fact that there hasn't been any legends in the Gotham Universe that points to any vigilante before the events of the show, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. Also another major thing that Gotham has tried is keeping it realistic. Granted the writers are trying to find that balance between realistic and comic book like, but throwing a vigilante into the mix pre-show's history would be going far too comic book too soon.

Evil: Court of the Owls
(Member or Enforcer?)
“The long arc of the show is Bruce Wayne’s journey of discovery down into the depths of the physical and meta-physical world of Gotham. The Court of Owls is a brilliant conceit that will absolutely be part of our storytelling. I just won’t tell you when.” That is a quote from showrunner Bruno Heller. This is something I've been hoping for since the show actually began. The Court has become an integral part of Gotham's mythology, and it was pretty obvious that they would eventually play a part.
The Court is usually made up of the upper class of Gothamites, making Thomas Wayne a prime candidate to be a court member. While his status says one thing, the content of his secret office says another. Since this is an Elseworld, and the show is more realistic than the other DC television shows, the Talons could be reimagined as normal hitmen, needing guns and a bulletproof vest to get the job done. With Thomas' doctor background, his knowledge of what could kill men as quickly and quietly as possible could make him a bigger threat than most hitmen. Him being a hitman would explain the blood and weapons in the cave, as well as a computer to keep the orders in tact, but as I said usually the rich are the members and poor are the Talons, but

We won't know the truth until way later in the season, but thats the beauty of Fanboy Theories; to allow the viewers to think. So what do you think Dr. Wayne was up to? Leave a comment and I'll see you next time!

    3. I've only read Court of Owls from earlier in this Batman run. I liked it but was so confused. And it seems like so long ago!

  2. I'm going for the 50/50 here: Thomas Wayne was a member of the Court of Owls BUT was actively trying to take them down from within.
