Oh those crazy Scots! While the Weird Science Get Fresh Crew gets no respect here in the States, when we were offered passes to the Glasgow Comic Con, I knew who to call...Pistol! Yep, I figured that our brother from another Country (that's a thing, right?) deserved some sort of reward for listening to our overlong podcast for as long as he has and plus, he reminds me a bit of Harry Styles! So, Harry...I mean Pistol, headed off to the Con and this is what he had to say about it...
Dressed as Gerard Way’s character, Party Poison, from the popular comic book series The Killjoys, my arrival at Glasgow Comic-Con could’ve gone a little bit smoother. I was passed from event organizer to event organizer until the last one took pity on me and took me at my word that I had a press pass put aside, organized by the Weird Science DC Comic guys. With my band strapped tightly round my wrist I headed into Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall, and promptly got lost.
Using the map I had been given I made my way to the exhibition area, where all the vendors were set up. My wallet got nervous as I looked around at all the geeky merchandise and comic books on offer.
I restrained myself and went off in search of artists’ alley, a collection of local and international talent.
I picked up a personalized issue of the Rick and Morty comic from the very pleasant Marc Ellerby, backup artist on the book and the new spin-off Lil’ Poopy Superstar.
Batgirl co-writer Cameron Stewart happily signed a couple of books and posed for a photo with me.
And then I spoke with Bombshells writer, the lovely Marguerite Bennett, whom my fiancée said had very nice nails. Yeah, I dunno! But I’ve really been enjoying the Bombshells book and it was nice to talk to Miss Bennett.
I feel, and have heard the same from others, that the layout of the Concert Hall detracted slightly from the overall feel of the Con as everything felt kinda split up. And people tend to feel less exposed when mingling in a crowd.
All in all though I really enjoyed going to Glasgow Comic-Con and I hope they continue to expand and flourish in the coming years. I just want to thank the Weird Science guys and the mysterious benefactor for setting me up with a VIP pass. And if comic-cons teach you anything it’s that people who cosplay as Deadpool are usually douchebags.
