DC Comics Best Covers of the Week 5/31/17

Fifth Week Blues

There's a fifth Wednesday in this month of May, and that means that DC Comics has run out of things to publish. This sometimes makes my job a little difficult, because it gives me a way smaller pool of comic book covers to choose from. This week it's really easy, though, because there were five covers in total! So they all make the cut. Check out what I have to say about 'em below!

Teen Titans Special #1
Mike McKone & Alex Sinclair
Well, this cover is okay, but the lightning kind of screws everything up. Beyond that, it's pretty run-of-the-mill aggressor standing over prostrate victim. There's a sword, but it's neither bisecting the image nor is it reflecting someone's face, so it gets lost.

Trinity Annual #1
 Guillem March and Tomeu Morey
Something about the composition of this cover is way off. Maybe its the looming skull-faced ninjas that gives the impression that Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman art at the bottom of a pit. Also, they don't appear to be in the same place at the same time, but cobbled together from three static images.

The Flash #23
Carmine DiGiandomenico
Now we're getting somewhere, the way the Flash is drawn here is especially cool since it looks like he's almost vibrating to pieces. The fact that Barry and Hal are mid-costume change is a nice touch that gives this image even more motion.

The Flash #23 variant
Howard Porter
Here's a much more dynamic cover for this issue, well balanced in terms of color and placement. Hal is front and center here, but it's important because the glint of his ring pulls everything together. The Flash's outstretched left hand over the title logo is a great touch.

Wonder Woman Annual #1
Nicola Scott & Romulo Fajardo, Jr.
Talk about saving the best for last, this cover might not have made the grade during a normal week, but it certainly would have been under consideration. Wonder Woman's outstretched arms almost carry (heh) the whole thing, but instead of putting her between Superman and Batman and having them exist under her armpits, but Nicola Scott was smart to set her a little to the left so that the three characters form a triangle. A trinity, if you will.

    1. It was slim pickings this week, Gucci! Still, I like Porter's cover a lot
