Bloodsport...Just Not as Good

Release Date: November 1, 2017

It's part two of the Bats out of Hell story and while I was not a fan of the first part (in Flash #33), I am more excited for this one.  Why?  Because of Liam Sharp on art and Robert Venditti writing.  Okay, it's more for the former, but we'll go from there.  So, is it any good?  Let's find out...

The issue starts off with narration from Cyborg and since he usually is stuck on monitor duty, I'll take whatever we get.  It's okay...talk about football and team work that leads nicely to what's going after the first issue's cliffhanger.  After a roll call of the heroes involved, we settle in with Barry Allen who is fighting with Red Death.  Actually, he's being chased by him.

It turns into a Speed Force Mad Max fiasco and while it looks pretty cool, the only real thing to take from it is the Dark Multiverse Barry still trying to convince the Red Death to be good. We then head off to see Aquaman and the Drowned face off and it's very quick, but manages to make it very personal for Arthur all the same.

It's obvious at this point that we will just be jumping between Justice League members and Wonder Woman is next.  While I liked the back and forth between Wonder Woman and the Merciless, it felt off from what we just saw in his one-shot.  There he couldn't even look Diana in the eye, but here he just trash talks and fights her.  Venditti does give the reader a nice bit of lore to go with the Merciless' penny and it leads to an all-out Amazonian zombie attack!

The issue ends with Hal Jordan starting his fight with the Dawnbreaker, but it's all a setup to get to the cliffhanger where we are told what the Dark Knights are going to use against our heroes.  I'll give you a hint...it starts with Cy and ends with borg.

Liam Sharp doesn't disappoint here and if you have been missing him since Wonder Woman, you'll be in for a treat when Diana shows up in the story.  As far as Venditti goes, there is nothing wrong with the writing here, just a feeling that nothing in this issue really matters.  It's just a battle royal between the remaining Justice League members and their Dark Multiverse counterparts.  If that's enough for you, have at it.  I need more.

Bits and Pieces:

The Bats Out of Hell story continues and nothing here can convince me that this story is important.  While the first issue of the story was mostly recap, this entry is just a bunch of fights strung together to make an issue.  I loved the art, but that's about it.

5.5/10

  2. I believe the Bats Out of Hell arc is designed to focus on the action between Dark Knights vs. JL. So I don't expect it to be compelling, that's what Metal is for. The cool part is that Red Death has a Batmobile that looks like it was taken from George Miller's Mad Max.
