DC Comics Best Covers of the Week: August 29, 2019

Suffering Sucko Covers

It's a fifth week, so pickings are slim around the ol' Best Covers studio. DC did that Looney Tunes crossover thing with a variant cover for each issue, so that helped shore up the numbers. But it's not gonna be a blockbuster list, I'll tell you now.

Lex Luthor/Porky Pig #1 variant
Mac Rey
So this made the list. I like that Porky's flesh tone is different from Lex's. Uh, that's about it.

Batgirl Annual #2
Emanuela Lupacchino
Here's a nice chaotic image that forces reader scrutiny. Ergo, it is not an effective comic book cover. There are word balloons, though, and you know how that tickles me. Again, cool enough image, but a fair dud in terms of advertising the comic book within.

 The Joker/Daffy Duck #1 variant
Sanford Greene
This is cool enough. The Joker and Daffy Duck, all crazy in an insane asylum together. Frankly, this cover and the one for Batgirl Annual #2 swapped places several times, but I think this one is more striking, and more effective at the purchase point. But really, it's something you would buy as a laser print at a comic convention. You could put Joker with an eggplant and people would be interested.

Red Hood and the Outlaws Annual #2
Kenneth Rocafort
A well-rendered piece that's rather busy for a cover. The coloring helps a lot here. And the hot bods, that also helps the ol' eyeballs. I love Kenneth Rocafort's art, but at a glance this looks like someone spilled the inkwell.

Batgirl #26 variant
Joshua Middleton
Bonjour, Joshua Middeltahn! Bonjour Batgirl! Are you taking your moped to the town for baguettes today? Don't forget your beret! Here's a cute image. It made the cut because the other covers were lamer. First person to get this tattooed on their chest wins a prize.
