I fail to understand why these New Age books are getting annuals quite early in their runs, but from what I can tell they shed light on our main character's backstory, and it works out quite well here. Spoiler alert!
The time period this story takes place in is sort of murky, but the gist of this issue is that Honor is reminiscing to her first time in Gotham, which is where she met her husband Blake... and the Batman.
The biggest takeaway from this issue was the relationship between Honor and Talia al Ghul, which is a lot more creepy than I thought it would be. A lot of the wording Talia uses reminds me of a sort of abusive relationship, where one party just isn't familiar with what life would be like without the other. In meeting Batman, she understands that family doesn't necessarily mean Talia; you can make your own family, and this is what she channels when she eventually gets with Blake and has a kid.
Jack Herbert's work here is pretty fantastic. I loved his Talia; she just bleeds the evil sexiness I most associate with the character, and his Batman is honestly one of the better takes I've seen in recent memory. The fight scene between Honor and Batman is so fantastic that ends with a simply brilliant Batman pose... clearly I miss traditional Batman.
Bits and Pieces:
I really did like this issue. It may be one of the best of the series, not just because of the action scenes, but also because it sheds some light on Honor's role as Talia's primary assassin, as well as the kind of person she used to be before she started her own family. This issue solidifies Honor as the best character in the New Age line.
