We Are Family!

Now while I had a hard time trying to convey the story of Earth 2: World's End, I think I might have a better time here.  Hopefully.  Anyway I started reading this book yesterday and then stopped because it said that the events in this book happen after Earth 2: World's End and now that I have read both I have to say that DC is a bunch of goddamn liars.  So while I was expecting my Earth 2 heroes taking on the Furies from Apokolips like I saw them doing at the end of World's End, here we have a book trying to acclimate Power Girl and Huntress to the new status quo of this world.  So no Furies, just a bunch of dysfunction and some mutants.  Let's check it out and see what this series will become now that The Kryptonian story arc is finished.

Explain It!:

Our story begins with a bunch of flashbacks showing us the life Power Girl and Huntress had before being expelled to Prime-Earth for five years.  We see scenes that show that Karen and Val knew each other on Krypton and how Kara........ I guess since we're on Earth 2 now we'll go back to calling Power Girl Kara, how she was raised by Clark and Lois and considered them her parents.  We also see that Thomas Wayne watched his granddaughter Helena since she was a child, but I found this part a little weird because it looks like Thomas Wayne was already Bat like in his fighting well before he should of been, when he stops a mugger from attacking Helena and her friends on their way home from school.  Oh well, we'll go with it.

Even though we saw our heroes facing a Fury of Apokolips at the end of World's End, here it seems that the heroes are only on their way to the Geneva fire pit and our story is about them getting sidetracked by a distress call at the C.E.R.N. Labs.  I guess the distress call wasn't a bad thing to check out on their way to the fire pit because it looks like the entire facility is being overrun with mutant monsters.  It seems that the illusive Bedlam and our heroes that he's using as puppets stopped by the facility and opened a doorway to Apokolips and the creatures that emerged from the Boom Tube infected the rest of the staff with their touch.  The one surviving uninfected doctor suggests that Val and Power Girl act as a super collider and burn up the infection with the radiation they'll create.  Pretty much they fly in opposite directions around the collider track until they hit the right speed then hit each other.  I'm no scientist and this all sounds like voodoo to me, but like Thomas Wayne's fighting prowess, I guess I'll go with this too.  It's weird science and we love that shit around here.

So as the rest of the Earth 2 team take on rampaging mutations, our two Kryptonians enact the plan and it seems that they save the day.  The surviving doctor suggests that they fly into space and get some sun to dispel their remaining radioactivity and we see the two holding hands while they soak up some rays and it looks like we might have a love story brewing between these too, even though they haven't seen each other since their planet still existed and they were only small children.  But I guess that's what you do when you're the only survivors of a extinct species............ and you have interlocking sex organs, that would be a big part of it too.  Oh and hey kids, guess what?  This is the best issue of Power Girl yet because the writers decided that they didn't need to find a way for her to get naked!  Hurray!  She's finally a real character!

In the end our heroes save the people of Geneva from a terrible mutant infection and we see the beginnings of our Worlds' Finest team acclimating themselves to their home world that has changed so much in their absence.  Well it might take a little longer for Helena because it doesn't seem like she trusts her grandfather in the slightest yet, but they have time to grow together.  That's it for Earth 2 this month but we won't have to wait long with World's End coming out every week so it looks like us Earth 2 fans have finally gotten what we wanted and we'll be seeing a whole lot more of this world and hopefully the name "World's End" is just really misleading and our heroes can save the day and we won't have to live through the awful future of Futures End.

Bits and Pieces:

I usually hate multiple artists but this issue didn't suffer from it at all and I really enjoyed the story they conveyed here even if I'm not entirely sold on the idea that this was a story that needed to be told.  There's just so much Earth 2 going on this week that I'm not surprised that somethings don't mesh completely.  This is more of a character piece getting our Worlds' Finest duo back into their old world and seeing how they groove with the rest of the cast and while it's a bumpy start, I think they'll do just fine here in the Earth 2 title.  I love these characters and I can't wait to see what the creators have in store for us with this leg of the Earth 2 story.

7.5/10
