Doctor Fate Is A Big Bag of Dicks

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

Last issue of Earth 2, I spent the majority of the review complaining about how this title that I love had merely become a way to tell some side stories that the writers of World's End didn't want to bother putting into the weekly series.  Yeah, I called this title World's End's Bitch.  Luckily though, after reading this issue I think I can say that Earth 2 will play bitch no longer and it will become the great title that it once was......... Well, I hope it will.  So let's check out this issue all about Doctor Fate and Aqua Woman, who have been sorely missed from World's End.  Let's check it out and get reacquainted with these two Earth 2 powerhouses.

Explain It!:

Our issue begins with Flash, Hawkgirl and Doctor Fate battling Proto-Furies outside of Atom's Haven, when out of nowhere Nabu tells his host Khalid that he should be used for more important battles....... Pretty much he gets Khalid to tell his friends to suck it and Doctor Fate teleports to Apokolips to.............. raid his weapons artifacts?  That's what it seems like at least.  Instead of using his vast powers of sorcery to possibly take on Darkseid and end the war between Apokolips and Earth....... It seems that Doctor Fate just wants to loot.  As Doctor Fate looks over the goods, he comes across a Darkseid faithful named Arcanus who has at his disposal a Apokoliptean mage and just when you expect the two sorcerers to fight, Nabu tells Khalid to suck it and trades up for a better host body.  So yeah, now that Khalid went against his better judgement and came to Apokolips, Nabu fucked him over and now he's stuck there without any power.  Don't worry though, it seems that Nabu isn't as cool as he thought he was because his new host seems to be more powerful than the helm and simply adds Nabu's power to his own and plans on using that power to attack and finish off the Earth.  Like my header says, Doctor Fate is a big bag of dicks.

Down in Atlantis, Aqua Woman sees that her people that were brought back from the dead by the Fury Death are put to good use as she creates a underwater tornado to spread their pieces throughout the ocean for food and what not for the sea life.  Now that the zombies are taken care of, Aqua Woman wants to just see that the people of Atlantis are taken care of and not deal with the war of the surface dwellers, but after seeing that the fire pits are drying up the ocean and that the world will be gone unless the Atlanteans do something.  She eventually decides that the Atlanteans will join the fight.  So yeah, good news, Aqua Woman is coming back to the fight.  I can't wait to see what she does in the upcoming issues of World's End.

Back on Apokolips, Khalid is trying to figure out what the hell he's going to do when we find out that Nabu still has a connection to Khalid.  Nabu telepathically tells Khalid that he needs him to get the helmet back and like a big old dummy, Khalid finally gives in......... I guess he's not actually a dummy.  The Helm of Fate under the control of Apokolips could only mean doom for everyone else and its' here that Nabu tells Khalid and all of us that Khalid has a lot of power of his own.  Now I'm okay with this idea. but somehow Khalid just simply walks back and magically cuts the new bad ass Apokoliptean sorcerer's head off and retrieves the helmet.  Now you might say that the helmet worked with Khalid due to their connection but this was a sorcerer that was supposed to be better than Khalid......... That's why Nabu traded up in the first place.......... I don't think I'll ever understand magic logic but I'm calling shenanigans.

In the end, Khalid becomes Doctor Fate again and scrubs the whole assault on Apokolips things and goes back to help out the Wonders of Earth 2.  Oh and Khalid also tells Nabu that when all this World's End stuff is over, he's burying the helmet so that it can never fall into the wrong hands again.  I think it's safe to say that with Nabu knowing what Khalid plans, he'll fuck Khalid over as soon as he finds a suitable host.  Lousy Doctor Fate.

That's it for this issue of Earth 2 and while it's a vast improvement from what we've had from this series lately, it still isn't all that great.  Yeah, we got to see characters that have been left out of the majority of Earth 2: World's End and that's awesome and all, but the stories we got to see them in wasn't that good.  Aqua Woman decides the hell with the war and then quickly changes her mind and Doctor Fate decides to be a dick and then he changes his mind too.  I just really hope we get to see these heroes actually be heroes in the future instead of them just flip flopping between not caring and caring.  Even with a story that wasn't completely solid, the art of this issue was really good and even though nothing will ever compare to Nicola Scott's run as penciler on this book, I have to give credit where credit is due by saying that the look of the book seems like it's in good hands.

Bits and Pieces:

While I'm not completely fond of the stories in this issue, I do like the fact that we're dealing with actual heroes of Earth 2 and it feels less like World's End's bitch, like I called it last month and more like a step towards what Earth 2 used to be and what I'd like it to be again.  I just wish that our heroes here wouldn't have been indecisive dick bags throughout the issue.

6.8/10

  1. I think Aquawoman is really cool. She should be on earth 1 , or maybe Mera can take that title

    1. I dig Aqua Woman too, I just wish that Earth 2 could survive this war and all the Wonders could just stay in their own universe. I just think that Aqua Woman and Aquaman co-existing in the same universe would cause too much turmoil for who the actual leader of Atlantis would be.
