This book isn't for me. I see that it's fairly well-received overall, but I just can't get into it. I don't enjoy the art, I don't find the characters to be compelling anymore, and as interesting as the concept is, it hasn't been executed very well in my mind. I can't say it's the worst thing I've ever read, but it doesn't hit on any of the levels that I thought it was going to. I really hope this infinite multiverse that has been set up turns out to be cool because at this point, that is the only thing I'm really looking forward to.
Explain It!
Well, I will give Si Spurrier one thing: he does pick up issues right from the cliffhangers of the previous ones. And here is no exception as we start out with Selena and Tabitha dealing with the fact that Tabitha just shot Bubba, her brother. Selena is blubbering around, unable to really say anything, while Tabitha is pretty indifferent about the whole thing. She says it's because she knows it was a decoy, but she pretty much says she wouldn't care either way. Selena is still unable to make a full sentence without stuttering from tears, even after the fake Bubba blows up and shows that Tabitha was right. Selena asks why Tabitha would do that to her without telling her. I'm not generally one to hate on the art because anything is a million times better than anything I could do, but the art here is down even from where it's been before. The proportions of everything change from page to page and some of the faces just look off to me.
Now we're going to get one of the flashbacks that has become standard in this series. Once again, it shows what a piece of shit mom Selena was to Tabitha. In the end of it, Selena tells her that she wishes that she had never been born. That is some solid parenting right there. Back in the present day, there is a parallel between how Tabitha is talking to her mom now, and how Selena talked to her in the past. Frankly, I've grown pretty tired of the whole hating each other thing. Every time that it seems like they are starting to move past it a little bit, the next issue comes and it's back to square one.
Selena takes her anger out by going directly to the head of Braintrust to figure out why they're hunting her and her daughter. Meanwhile, Tabitha is off somewhere else drinking herself into a stupor. I'm sure if someone asked her who her favorite creative team is at this point, it'd be TomasGleason, that's how drunk she gets. But it doesn't last long, because apparently her suit is so advanced that it can deploy detoxicants and sober her up instantly. So she heads off to fight some people.
Selena has managed to get some information out of Braintrust, and she finds out that she apparently stole her chair thing that she rides in from them. And, apparently, she used it to erase some of her memories. Maybe that explains why none of her progression lasts from issue to issue, but who knows. This whole thing is kind of forced in there. She goes to tell Tabitha because she doesn't want to be alone when she gets her memories back. Not to apologize or anything, but because she wants to be selfish some more. But, when she walks into Tabitha's room, she finds it empty except for a note to her.
The note is actually a hologram of Tabitha talking to her mom that she left behind. She has pieced some things together so she goes off in search of Bubba and her dad on her own. She actually does manage to find them with very little difficulty, but Bubba doesn't even recognize her. The issue ends with Bubba standing over a casket and turning to point a gun at Tabitha.
Well, I don't know what else to say other than I am still not a fan of this series. I think the only reason I am able to get through each issue easier and quicker is because my expectations are so far down. That being said, I'm still not enjoying this book and don't see that changing any time soon.
Bits and Pieces
Much like the rest of the series so far, this one isn't doing it for me. The conflict between mother and daughter is getting very old as it has been repeated in every issue. A lot of the plot developments in this issue seemed very forced in and the story continues to fall short of the premise. This is one Vertigo series that I would pass on.
