Not Quite Risen Yet

Last time In Earth 2 World's End we saw something really upsetting, you know besides for the amount of artists on the book.  We witnessed the shooting death of Barbara Grayson........ I don't know if I'm done mourning yet... Okay I'm done make her Spectre now!  Besides for Barbara Grayson's untimely death, we saw Green Lantern, Grundy and Sam taking on the Furies and it looked like Aqua Woman's Cthulhu monster is the avatar for the blue and it might be on it's way as backup for the fighting avatars.  Mister Miracle got back on Apokolips and after learning that Darkseid isn't his daddy, he got a little pissed off.  Finally we saw Hawkgirl and Flash reunited and thanks to Doctor Fate's spell, Hawkgirl wasn't on that killing fix she had started the issue with.  So let's see what this issue brings and if Barbara Grayson will become Spectre like I want her to and if Darkseid truly rises like the solicits said he would.  Let's check it out.

Explain It!:

Our story begins with Dick Grayson freaking out about his wife being shot and killed right in front of him.......... So it's understandable that he doesn't fight off the man that killed her.  What doesn't happen though is Barbara Grayson doesn't become Spectre and a piece of me dies inside.  I thought I had this shit figured out and this would happen.  But no, she's dead and instead of Dick and his son (who for some reason they call Tommy in this) getting the same treatment that Barbara got, this time Constantine and his team steps in and wrecks house.  All the bad dudes in the area are taken out by Jonni Thunder, Obsidian and Brainwave and finally Dick has the people on the train take Johnny so he can be taken to safety.... What I didn't tell you?  Oh yeah, there's a tidal wave making it's way to Chicago......... Shit's weird on Earth 2.  Before we're done with Chicago though we see that Constantine goes against his own series continuity and why he goes to find out why his magic isn't working.  It's actually pretty comical here because he simply teleports away leaving his new team behind to go find out why his magic is wonky...... So I guess all those Team Constantine shirts I was making was for nothing because it appears like we'll never see him with these characters again.  Follow Constantine's adventures on Earth 2 in his own book because he was written right the hell out here.

Down in Desaad's cloning labyrinth.......... I've been wanting to say something about this, who the hell makes a cloning facility inside of a labyrinth?  Lousy Apokolipteans and their eccentricities.  So Superman is alive as we saw in the last issue and he tells us that Desaad has been using him and Wonder Woman to build better soldiers and we see what he means when Huntress makes her debut after her complete makeover.  Huntress is now a Fury of Apokolips and she's sporting bat wings and four arms...............  How the hell did that just happen?  I mean to everyone else in the group Huntress shouldn't have been gone long enough to die and then come back with bat wings and four arms, so what's up here?  Well Power Girl isn't going to let her friend being turned into a monster lying down and she tells everyone else to get out because she's going to handle this one on her own.... Which never sounds like a good idea..... and I guess everyone forgot that they went down there to shut the fire pit down........ But hey, Superman's alive so fuck it and somewhere there might be a living Wonder Woman we can spend our time worrying about.

In the end the avatar of the blue or Cthulhu as I like to call him, shows up and gives the other avatars some breathing room between them and the Furies.  I just hope that this monster knows it's friends fromm it's enemies.

On Apokolips, Mister Miracle confronts Darkseid down in the Mobius Chamber and for all his pleading and threats, Darkseid will not react to Mister Miracle and finally our New God escape artist gets Mister Terrific's Boom Spheres and plans on killing the thing that he thought was his father, but ultimately all he did was release Darkseid from some sort of force field that was around him.  So we leave this issue with Darkseid climbing out of the Mobius Chamber and the words Next: Darkseid Rises and I'm left pissed off because that's what the solicit said about this issue!  How many times is this dude going to rise?  Do it already.

That's it for this issue of Earth 2: World's End and I have to tell you that I'm a little bit more than disappointed that I wasn't right about Barbara becoming Spectre here........  Yeah you're right, it will probably happen next issue and I should just stop worrying about it.  Besides for my disappointment there though, there wasn't much going on this issue besides for the start of Darkseid rising...... for some reason.  Constantine said bye out of nowhere, we had a really small fight with the avatars of Earth and the Furies and Huntress becoming a monster.  Yeah Huntress being a monster is pretty big, but we just saw that she got all ugly and nothing came of it here.  So not exactly a action packed, ground breaking issue.  I can tell you that I didn't find myself being as turned off by the art this week as I did last and if I knew who did what in this book I might be able to tell you more about it, but seeing as I don't I won't.  See you next week as we see how long it takes Darkseid to rise and if Huntress gets any prettier............................... and Barbara becoming Spectre.

Bits and Pieces:

I wasn't too impressed with this week's issue.  For as many stories as we jumped around to, nothing really happened.  Like the cover and the solicit suggests, Darkseid rises......... well he begins to rise.  You have to understand he's getting a little up there in age and rising isn't as easy for him as it used to be.  So sorry all you World's End fans, if you were looking for that punch you in the gut awesome issue that I was hoping for, well then you're going to be disappointed.

5.5/10

  1. Completely agree with your review, I find it really annoying to be promised a RISING, only to get to the last page and read a "Next: Darkseid Rises!". As for the art, it is also SO annoying that it's not clear who does what. Since I really am enjoying the Hawkgirl/Fate and Graysons' bits, I took it to searching who was responsible for those parts. So, apparently, the artists credits correspond (usually) to the parts of the story in the reading order they are presented to us. I.E. In this issue #10, Herbert and Cifuentes did the Batman and crew part, Jimenez did the Graysons', Barrows and Ferreira did the Mr. Miracle one and Duursema and Geraci did the green lantern bit. I have crosschecked (lol) since issue #6 and so far, this pattern appears to be consistent. Thanks for the review!

    1. Thanks for the info and thanks for reading. Hopefully though the artist situation will clear itself up and DC will decide to only have one or two artists on a book at a time.
