Okay, let's get back to our "Lies" story, where in the previous issue we saw Steve Trevor captured by the warlord Cadulo so that he could use Steve as a vessel or avatar for the god Urzkartaga........ or something along those lines because it also seems that Cadulo wants to be the vessel for the mucky god.  Maybe vessels and avatars mean something different to Cadulo than they do to me, either way, things don't look good for Steve Trevor so hopefully Wonder Woman and Cheetah get to the sacrificial alter fast and stop Urzkartaga from walking the Earth once again.  Let's jump into this issue and check it out.

Explain It!:

Our issue begins with me being confused at first because I could have sworn that our previous issue ended with Wonder Woman seeing Steve Trevor getting sacrificed by Cadulo, but here it seems that our Princess is taking her time in releasing all the kidnapped women from the surrounding villages and even taking more time out of rescuing Steve to reassure the women that they are powerful and courageous.  Eventually though, Wonder Woman does get on the saving Steve trolley and it's a good thing she does because whatever it was that Cadulo did to Steve, it was about to let Urzkartaga enter the warlord and not in a sexy way.

It's after Wonder Woman intervenes with Urzkartaga's freedom that this issue begins getting a little wonky to me and feels like it's trying to wrap things up a little too quick.  Throughout this issue, Cheetah had been telling Wonder Woman about how Urzkartaga has always had women worshiping him and that his bride, the Cheetah has always been "The Protector", but somehow during Diana's fight with the Swamp Thing wanna-be, she realizes that the mad god is actually afraid of the women and instead of them being there to worship him, they're actually there to be its warden.  Now maybe I'm missing something here, but if the women that were specifically brought to Urzkartaga are actually the thing that's keeping the god at bay............ then why the hell were they brought there in the first place?  On top of that, Wonder Woman also realizes that Cheetah was never meant to be "The Protector" of Urzkartaga, but of the women keeping the monster from walking the Earth.  This leads to all the women, our hero and Cheetah included, wrapping the Lasso of Truth around Urzkartaga until he becomes nothing more than a tall ass flower.

In the end, the day is saved, Urzkartaga has been vanquished and as we leave this issue we see that Cheetah has been reverted back to her original state of simple Barbara Ann Minerva.  Wonder Woman cradles her once friend as Barbara realizes that she's been lied to this entire time.

That's it for this issue of Wonder Woman and while I've really been enjoying this series, I have to say that this finale to our first story arc comes off a little too rushed, especially since Wonder Woman seemed to defeat Urzkartaga by simply jumping to wild conclusions that just happened to work at the end.  Besides for a big ass fight scene that didn't really matter in the long run because of how this ended, the rest of the issue felt odd as well because we had two separate instances where we just had to see someone talk shit and Cheetah threatening them, as if we didn't already know that she's no one to trifle with.  It's not a bad issue, it's just a lackluster ending to this story arc, but luckily the art in this issue remained amazing and even though I felt lost for everything that Wonder Woman just happened to know out of nowhere, I still enjoyed reading through this book because it just looked great.

Bits and Pieces:

While I've been loving this series, I have to say that this finale to our first story arc came off feeling a bit rushed to get to the conclusion, but luckily the art remained strong as hell and was really the best part about this issue.  Hopefully the pacing gets back to normal when we pick back up with the search for Themyscira.

7/10

  2. This reminded me of BVS. Wonder woman releaves the Villan of his arm, he grows a spike in its place, only he doesn't get the chance to stab her like doomsday did to superman because why?... circling him with the lasso causes him to disintegrate... what kind of shit is that? 6/10

    1. Yeah, it was a pretty lackluster ending for all the awesome build-up we had, but I still look forward to where this series is going.

  4. I thought this issue read quick. It really did seem like Wonder Woman was pulling all this stuff out of her butt. Urzkartaga bringing the women there was really bizarre..and dumb of him.
