Wonder Woman #10 Review

I love Wonder Woman and loved the one-shot Barbara Minerva story that we go last time in place of the usual Year One story.  However, I have to admit that after that issue and the recent "Lies" story, it feels like Year One is being left behind a bit.  Maybe it's just me, but the neck in neck race between the two stories shifted to the Lies and I hope that Year One can make a strong stretch run.  With Nicola Scott on art (for now), it shouldn't be hard.  So, does this issue get me pumped back up for the Year One story?  Let's find out...


The issue begins with Steve and Etta requesting a little R&R for them an Diana and when it's allowed, it's off to the mall!  Actually, it's more of an outdoor promenade, but you say tomato...  They are joined by Barbara Minerva who acts as an interpreter and it's so cute to see Steve desperately trying to find out everything that Diana says.

Actually, the whole first quarter of the book is cute as the group debates on all the things they want to show Diana as she drifts off to make some young friends.  Greg Rucka does a great job showing how attracted everyone is to Diana's aura and Nicola Scott sells it big time with her awesome art.

After finding out that the gifts the gods gave Diana are on a need to know basis and that the Lasso also acts as a universal translator, the book takes a darker turn as terrorists attack the crowd.

While Diana still has a deer in the headlights look to her, she jumps into the fray with Steve while Etta helps the wounded.  Diana's look quickly turns to that of a warrior and Nicola Scott gives the reader three awesome pages showing how great Wonder Woman is.  Seriously, I know it sounds cliche, but they are easily worth the $2.99 cover price all by themselves!

We then get a Wonder Woman/Steve Trevor teamup and the duo kick total ass with Steve ending up without a shirt (sexy!) and Diana smothering a grenade with her hands.  The issue ends with Wonder Woman finding out she has another awesome power as her and Steve meet up with Barbara and Etta.  We also find out that the terrorists are a very familiar group to Steve, Diana and Barbara.

This is a very quick read and while it isn't chock full of new information, it felt just right.  Greg Rucka has been nailing both of his stories with expert pacing and that continues this week. It's all about Wonder Woman and how awesome she is, while giving us a little more of the Sear Group mystery behind the scenes.

I can't say enough about Nicola Scott's art here and on the series in general.  It is so awesome and I love it.  I love every little bit about it and would pay to have the middle spread framed so I could put it above my desk.  Did I say it's awesome and I love it?!?

Bits and Pieces:

Greg Rucka is using this Year One story to remind us how much we love Wonder Woman and we learn about her all over again.  While I love the story, I may love the art even more. Nicola Scott is fighting Liam Sharp as to who is the best Wonder Woman artist nowadays, but the real winner is the reader.  I can't see how any Wonder Woman fan won't fall in love with this issue.
