*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

Let's get back to some Wonder Woman action since in the previous issue, we saw our Amazon Princess come face to face with her twin brother for the first time....... and it's probably a good thing that they finally found each other, what with Grail out and about killing demi-gods and feeding their life force to her daddy baby Darkseid.  So yeah, with that little introduction I think I caught everyone up with what's been going on in Wonder Woman lately, but sadly, it seems that James Robinson decided that we didn't know enough going into this story so let's check out this prequel issue.

Explain It!:

Our issue starts off with me being very frustrated because while I was really looking forward to this issue because of how the previous one ended, with Wonder Woman seeing her brother Jason, instead we travel back in time and just see Grail killing more demi-gods so that she can feed her father Darkseid and hopefully give him enough power so that he becomes his former self again.  That's right, instead of getting to know what's up with Jason and what he's been doing all this time, we just see more of the same and that starts with Grail killing Perseus by absorbing his life force........ and then letting Pegasus go because Darkseid doesn't deem it worthy enough for a chase.......... which I think is going to come back and bite them on the ass later, but with that, we move further back in time, where baby Darkseid first gives Grail the telepathic suggestion about what he needs to become whole again.

Before Grail can go on her demi-god quest though, we see that ARGUS has been on her trail ever since the Darkseid War and that they sent out their elite troops the "Atomic Knights" to take out Grail and bring Darkseid in, but these knights aren't shit compared to the daughter of Darkseid and after she's defeated them all, we move into a montage of killing, where we finally end up in Greece, where preteen Darkseid and Grail come across Jason, but it seems that Darkseid has bigger plans for the twin of Diana than just feeding off him so he commands Grail to let Jason be.

That's it for this issue of Wonder Woman and I don't know if it was because I was so excited by the end of last issue because of the prospect of finally getting to know Jason that I found myself just angry with this issue since it was a prequel........ or if it was just because nothing really went down here besides for the idea that Darkseid has bigger plans for Jason.  Yeah, it's probably both because really, most of this issue's information could have been put together by the issues we had previous to this and the idea of halting our progression of the story so that we can take a closer look just seemed like an odd choice.  Maybe Pegasus will come into play later on, but really, the majority of this story wasn't needed and the issue's only real saving grace is the fact that the art was fantastic all the way through.

Bits and Pieces:

For some reason it was decided that the third issue into this arc needed to be a prequel to what's been going on so far and I don't know who's idea it was, but besides for two small pieces of information, this entire issue didn't feel needed at all.  Thankfully though, the art was amazing so at least it had that going for it.

5.8/10

  1. So, Robinson reimagined Atomic Knights just immediately kill them off, because that isn't a mean spirited cliche in comics at all. But it had an important point, to show what a threat Grail is-she can even slaughter these guys you've never heard of before!

I expect Robinson not to care about Wonder Woman-I do have to wonder (shut up) what was the point of rebooting Wonder Woman in Rebirth, when nobody writing her knows or is too lazy to spend five minutes to Google something though-but Azzarello didn't care about her either, yet he still cared about his story. Robinson is so not giving a shit, he actually thinks KRaken from Clash of the freaking Titans is part of Greek myth.

  2. Disappointing issue. Looks like Robinson has maybe one or two issues worth of story for his limited run, and decided to pad it out with lots and lots of filler. Going FU5 on this one as well. With Batman Beyond, that's two out of my 4 books this week. So sad...
