Three's a Crowd

Year Three has been very magical and a little too predictable.  The magical part has been so cool with the likes of Constantine, The Spectre joining the fight while the predictable part has been upsetting.  Maybe it's the fact that we've been through so many crazy things in this book that the shock value has diminished, but nothing that's happened lately has been surprising.  While that can be said for this week as well, I did like the character work Tom Taylor gives us as well as one hell of a guest star.

If you read last week's issue, you know that Ragman is so, so dead.  Constantine watched his "friend" get torn to shreds and the issue ended with Superman getting ready to do the same to him.  We pick up this week with Superman questioning Constantine on the whereabouts of Raven in what can only be called the "Zod Method".  He's not going to snap his own neck, but Sinestro jumps in to stop him.  In a predictable move, Sinestro tells Supes to spare Constantine as a bargaining chip.  Team Superman takes him and flies off to the Hall of Justice.

While Shazam dangles Constantine, Deadman shows up.  I love Boston Brand and am so psyched he's entered Injustice.  He's also entered Shazam's mind.  I really enjoyed the back and forth between Boston and Billy Batson.  Up until now, Shazam seemed on the fence with Superman's actions, but Billy is a full on Superman supporter.

Deadman didn't show up to talk to a young kid or his superhero alter ego, he came for the Spectre.  The issue ends with a bigger shock than we've got in quite a while and the promise of another one of my favorite characters biting the dust.  I really want to see what the shocker is all about.

Tom Taylor has really slowed the pace of this book, but there are a couple good character moments.  Superman is a bad guy, but his biggest issue is the company he keeps.  He really picked a bunch of evil guys for his team and I'm sure they will be a major part of his undoing.

Bruno Redondo and Juan Albarran do a fine job on art this week, but nothing was really jaw dropping great.  The issue looked good, but I've grown accustomed to praising Redondo and can only say him and Albarran did an okay job.

Bits and Pieces:

Injustice: Year Three #9 is a slower paced issue that puts the shocks on hold for a few good character moments.  The issue ends with a surprise that is intriguing enough to have me excited for next week, but everything before it is only a little above okay.
