*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

For story arc after story arc we've been dealing with Cyborg questioning his humanity and wondering exactly where his place in the world is, but hopefully with this new arc we're dealing with, we'll finally get Vic to stop moping around and realize that while he may be a machine, he's all man where it counts........... in his soul, you sickos.  That's what we're going to be dealing with here, while that strange ass cyborg that looks like Vic's father tries to put an end to humanity by creating a cyborg uprising, which apparently needs our boy Cyborg to be the catalyst.  Let's jump into this issue and see if Vic's moping around can be flipped on it's head so that our hero can be one with humanity right when we need him the most.  Let's check it out.

Explain It!:

Our issue begins with a little action scene, where Cyborg takes out an armored car robbery that had the misfortune of planning its escape down the road that STAR Labs happens to be on....... and for the most part, that's where our action ends because the rest of the issue is all about running diagnostics on Vic's systems and afterwards, Dr. Sarah Charles running diagnostics on Vic's soul.  That's right boys and girls, Vic is still upset from what he heard in the Rebirth issue, about how his father isn't sure whether he saved his son or created a machine that simply thinks it's Silas' son.  This leads us to a walk around town, where Vic tries to act like he doesn't want any damn ice cream, but after Sarah doesn't buy it, he knows exactly what kind of ice cream he wants to the point where he wants extra red sprinkles and it's funny as hell.  Too bad that the laughs don't continue though when Cyborg is noticed by two kids who proclaim that they're his biggest fans and when one of them ask if Sarah is his girlfriend, the other responds that Cyborg doesn't have a girlfriend because he's a machine and doesn't feel love.  I gotta tell ya, this part actually made me a bit upset, even for how tired I am of this whole humanity vs. machine type story.

So after Vic got punched right in the feels from those two snot nosed kids, Sarah tries one more thing that she's sure will get Cyborg to feel his soul and that's a little improvised jazz.  Yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of music anymore....... Hell, the last song I listened to besides for the ones for the podcast was Corey Feldman's Go 4 It track so the idea of finding one's soul from a blind man on a horn doesn't really jive with me, but it seems that it's exactly what Vic needs at this moment and Sarah and him leave the club with Vic feeling like he's taken a step in the right direction.  Too bad that at that moment, maybe humanity isn't exactly what he needs because he's confronted by one of that strange ass Silas looking cyborg's newest creations named Kilg%re, who's like a big robotic monster, who's been reading the Superman title and really thinking that Eradicator had some good ideas because he wants to purge the humanity right out of our hero.

That's it for this issue of Cyborg and while it focused primarily on our hero finding his soul through the powers of jazz, which is something that I really can't relate to, I found myself digging this low key issue because while it's more of Vic trying to find the man in the machine, it was full of humor and heart and worked really well....... not to mention, we're going to be getting a big ass robot monster fighting our boy in the next issue, which just seems awesome as hell.  I loved the art in this book and find myself caring about Vic finding himself because for one thing, this seems like the best version of that story we've seen so far and for another, I'm hoping that with that, this will be the definitive story and will be our last foray into it.  I guess it has to happen though so that new readers can jump on and understand our techno hero's mindset and the problems he faces.  Not the most exciting issue, but interesting nonetheless.

Bits and Pieces:

While we're diving back into a story that's dealing with Cyborg trying to find his humanity, this presentation of it seems to work better for me than previous tries because not only is it full of heart, it's full of humor as well and you need that to balance out an issue, especially when there's not a lot going on in it.  I loved the art in this book and can't wait to see more, I just hope that Cyborg gets to stop moping around soon.

7.8/10

  2. I had time for one book last night and it was either this or Harley. I chose this due to it probably being a forgettable read which was perfect as I was super tired anyway. Surprise, I really liked this issue and can totally relate to the Jazz stuff. I grew up in Nawlens and have spent the last 12 years around Detroit. Baker's Keyboard Lounge off of 8 mile road is one of the best Jazz clubs in the nation. Feel the music Reggie don't just listen to it! I do have an issue with the red button art where Vic's belly button should be, are they trying to simulate him having a belly button there?
