I think that everyone who wrote off Bryan Hitch's run on Justice League and skipped this final story are missing out on a pretty good one.  Hitch has given readers some very likable young characters in these future kids of the Justice League and their are some that I hope will continue out of this.  Yea, I kind of know that isn't happening, but I can still hope.  Last issue ended with a bunch of messed up things going on so I couldn't wait to see what happens in this issue.  Well, is it any good?  Let's find out...

We start right where we left off...the Darkness has Simon and Diana and is trying to work into everyone...to get them to kill each other.  It's a good start, especially when we find out that Steve Trevor is not Hunter's father (poor Steve).  However, I do have to point out that it shouldn't be a given that the Lantern kids, Jason and Jenny, are Simon's or Jessica's...Lanterns aren't inherited.  I understand things are different in the kid's future, but it still bothered me a bit.

After the quick reintroductions, we get to the heart of the matter...why is the Darkness already out and about?  Did the kid's ruin things more by coming back in time?  We have to wait on that as we head off to Amnesty Bay to see Sovereign, Aquaman, Mera and Serenity.  It's a bit of a messed up family reunion where we learn exactly what happened to Aquaman in the future.  After that, we get a hint at who Sovereign might actually be.

We then get Batman heading off to find Cyborg.  There is a weird interaction with Genie in the Batwing, but I'm glad we get more Batman here because that's the only thing really missing from this overall story.

We then head to Midway and find out Wonder Woman is holding the Darkness at bay, but also that the kids arriving in the present did kickstart the whole thing.  Sovereign joins the party and it's a battle royal as the Darkness sits and watches...and learns.  That gives Simon some time to break loose from it's hold and rally the kids.

We leave them to head off to check in on Flash, Jessica, Cyborg and Superman in a pocket dimension where Aquaman put them.  They find a message from Arthur who explains what's going on and why Sovereign has shown up in the present.  He also sets up a plan to take her down.

The issue ends with Sovereign revealing herself to Diana and telling her to let the Darkness take over the world so they can leave it in ruins together.  As the missing Justice League members boom tube in, it looks like Wonder Woman is doing just that.

This was another good issue of the Legacy story, just not as good as the starting ones.  There is nothing awfully wrong about it, I think I just liked when the story was more about the kids.  Hitch has kind of shoved them aside to deal with the Justice League and since they are the stars of the book, I can't complain too much.  Maybe I can, but I won't.

This may be Fernando Pasarin's best issue of the arc.  The art looks really good and even with a crazy amount of inkers, it's pretty consistent throughout.

Bits and Pieces:

Bryan Hitch's continues his Legacy arc with some more answers and a crazy cliffhanger.  While I want more of the kids, Hitch focuses on the League and it's game on between them and Sovereign.  This isn't my favorite issue of the arc, but it's still a good read.

7.0/10

  1. I liked this issue, Sovereign really seems like a villain that warrants having 2 justice league fight her. Her identity makes me think that we might actually gets some themyscra stuff for wonder woman going forward, and the search for Hunters father still has me intrigued.
I agree with your score Jim.

  2. While Hitch's run on Justice League began with a tumble it looks like he's going to stick the landing.
I haven't loved everything about Justice League since Rebirth. I was even questioning artist Bryan Hitch's writing abilities. I don't know what changed, him or me. I'm really enjoying this Legacy arc and I even hope to see some of these characters stick around or return.
This story isn't perfect though, but really what is? I feel I can see where this story will end and I felt the art was a bit inconstant, but all in all a really fun read. 6.5 for me and looking forward to the next issue.
