Green Arrow #28 Review

Paper Thin

Written by; Ben Percy
Art by: Juan Ferreyra and Nate Piekos
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: August 2, 2017

I have not really been all out enjoying this Hard Traveling Hero arc mainly because it really has been paper thin.  Each issue features another member of the Justice League working with Ollie which is all well and good, but the story underneath, supposedly connecting it all has been paper thin.  Not only that, but it just hasn't been much fun.  Do things pick up this week as Ollie heads off to Metropolis?  Let's find out...

The issue opens with Green Arrow dropping in on Lex Luthor to ask him why the big bad from last issue was in a Lex Corps mech suit.  While Lex has heard of the Ninth Circle, he turned them down and thinks this rogue employee was a setup to make him look bad.

Meanwhile, it seems that Henry has been working on an app for Queen Industries that is now put into use to shame all of Lex's employees.  I mean, it must be really bad shit because people are jumping out of windows and stepping in front of buses.  Of course this is Metropolis, so Superman is there to save them.  If it wasn't such a grim scenario, it could have been played off for laughs.

The whole thing is done to set up the idea that Lex is only as good as his employees as word of these attempted suicides sends Lex Corps stock plummeting amid this cyber attack.  What is Lex to do?  Well, he counteracts the attack by recoding the virus to send out "messages of hope and love".  Seriously.

The issue ends with Superman telling Oliver he is a changed man in a very good way and Lex giving him the next bit of Intel...leading to Gotham City.

This issue just followed suit with the rest of this arc.  I guess Percy is more concerned with making Oliver friends with the Justice League again rather than give us an actual story about Oliver clearing his name.  This one even threw in the bit with Lex being a one-percenter who learns that his employees are worth more than he thought.  Lovely.

Juan Ferreyra is on art and that's always a good thing, but it felt like something was holding him back a bit.  Don't get me wrong, everything looked great, but the usual clever panel borders and layouts were almost completely missing and it just was more straight forward than I've come to expect.  Still the art was the highlight of the issue.

Bits and Pieces:

This issue had outstanding art, but not much of a story, unfortunately.  Ben Percy seems more concerned of getting Oliver to meet the Justice League than actually telling any kind of story, especially one with Ollie clearing his name.  I hope things pick up next issue, because I haven't been enjoying this arc much at all.

6.0/10

  3. I've actually been enjoying this arc quite a bit more maybe 7.5 out of 10 range ...I don't care if the dialogue has to be a little corny to get Ollie back in favor with the justice League so long as that's our destination I'm cool with it.

Keep up the great work Juan

  4. Well this is not a story about Oliver cleaning his name, that´s the next arc. This one is about trying to ruin the Ninth Circle´s plans of expansion. I agree that the last two issues were very average at best, but this one was really good to me. It would be great to see Ferreyra drawing Superman again.
